SALISBURY, N.C. – The Catawba College swimming team opened up the 2022 season on Saturday afternoon with a dual meet against the Emory & Henry Wasps at Johnson Pool. The women's team won 146-122 while the men were victorious, 154-100. Fourteen different Catawba swimmers won individual events in Saturday's action, and the Indians won all four relays.
On the men's side, freshman Alejandro Alvarez won both the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard butterfly in his first collegiate swim meet. Alvarez swam a 1:47.53 in the 200 free and a 2:01.99 in the 200 fly to cruise to a pair of wins as both times were over three seconds faster than the next placed finish.
Rodrigo Fernandez swept the men's 100 and 200-yard backstroke on the day after he turned in times of 54:05 and 2:03.19 respectively. He also took second place in the 100-yard butterfly.
Veteran Ofek Malul was victorious in his two individual events on Saturday as he won the 100-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard freestyle. Malul finished his swim in the breaststroke in 1:03.30, two seconds faster than his teammate Zach Hannah who finished in second. In the 100 freestyle, Malul edged out Emory and Henry's Owen Seymour with a time of 49.77 and touched the wall three tenths of a second faster.
The men's and women's swimming teams will be back in action next Saturday with a dual meet at Barton starting at 1:00 p.m.
