Men's Swimming edges Division I La Salle in fifth-place finish at Fall Frenzy Invite

Charlotte, N.C. - The Catawba College men's swim team saw four school records fall at the Kellianne Nagy Fall Frenzy Friday through Sunday, securing a fifth-place finish out of seven competing teams, including besting Division I La Salle.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

200 Yard Freestyle Relay

- Ryan Case, Isaac Haut, Maks Minichowski, and Balazs Meszaros finished fifth with a final mark of 1:22.19

500 Yard Freestyle

- Alejandro Alvarez swam in the Consolation bracket and placed 10th overall with a 4:37.82 effort, followed by Lewis Mikesell in 22nd and Leon Heiermann in 24th in the Bonus bracket with times of 4:43.77 and 41:50.17, respectively

200 Yard Individual Medley

- Joao Oliveira finished fifth in the Championship bracket with a time of 1:50.34, followed by Meszaros winning the Consolation heat and placing ninth overall with a time of 1:49.71. Rodrigo Yus Fernandez took 12th overall and fourth in the Consolation bracket with a 1:52.14 mark, while Nolan Lacjak took 21st overall and fifth in the Bonus heat at 1:56.06

50 Yard Freestyle

- Minichowski paced the Catawba men, taking sixth overall in the Championship group with a time of 20.36. Haut notched a 21st overall final and fifth in the Bonus bracket at 21.15

400 Yard Medley Relay

- The team of Yus Fernandez, Rowan Viles, Meszaros, and Minichowski notched a fifth place finish thanks to a school-record time of 3:19.35 while another team consisting of Lacjak, Marshall Wells, Oliveira, and Alvarez placed ninth with a time of 3:24.81

200 Yard Medley Relay

- Yus Fernadez, Viles, Meszaros, and Minichowski secured sixth with a 1:31.10 mark while Haut, Wells, Lacjak, and Case notched ninth thanks to a 1:32.83 effort

400 Yard Individual Medley

- Oliveira was barely edged out in the men's Championship heat, finishing second with a school-record time of 3:55.39 and just .33 behind the leading mark. Enrique Rodriguez notched 13th overall and fifth in the Consolation bracket, followed by Alvarez at 15th overall and seventh in the same heat as they posted final times of 4:07.53 and 4:11.84, respectively. Heiermann would be 19th overall and third in the Bonus heat with a time of 4:16.31

200 Yard Freestyle

- Elias Hysing would place 19th overall and third in the Bonus, followed by Haut at 23rd overall and eighth in the heat with times of 1:42.82 and 1:44.44, respectively

100 Yard Breastroke

- Minichowski broke the school record in both prelims and the final, taking second in the Championship with a 53.68 effort. Three more Catawba swimmers competed in the Consolation group, led by Viles at 11th overall and third in the heat with a time of 54.93. Meszaros was right behind him at 12th overall and fourth with a time of 55.80, followed by Wells in 14th overall and 6th in the heat at 56.76

100 Yard Backstroke

- Yus Fernandez placed 10th overall and second in the Consolation heat with a 50.98 effort, followed by Lacjak in 16th overall and eighth in the same bracket with a time of 53.02

800 Yard Freestyle Relay

- The team of Case, Alvarez, Hysing, and Oliveira took seventh with a 6:52.55 effort

1650 Yard Freestyle

- Hysing paced the men, finishing fifth thanks to a final mark of 15:59.40 and closely followed by Heiermann in seventh with a time of 16:16.03. Mikesell would also finish 11th with a final time of 16:36.53

200 Yard Backstroke

- Yus Fernandez placed eighth overall in the Championship heat with a time of 1:50.36. Lacjak would finish 12th overall and fourth in the Consolation bracket at 1:53.49

100 Yard Freestyle

- Minichowski finished fifth overall in the Championship bracket thanks to a 44.65 final. Haut and Case would finish 22nd and 23rd overall and sixth and seventh respectively in the Bonus heat with times of 46.49 and 46.56

200 Yard Breaststroke

- Viles paced the Catawba men, taking eighth in the Championship with a school-record time of 2:08.31. Meszaros would win the consolation heat and earn ninth overall with a time of 2:00.95, as Wells took 15th overall and seventh in the Consolation group at 2:07.15

200 Yard Butterfly

- Oliveira led the Consolation heat and finished ninth overall thanks to a 1:49.64 effort, followed by Alvarez at sixth in the same heat and 14th overall at 1:53.06. Rodriguez would finish second in the Bonus heat and 18th overall at 1:54.86

400 Yard Freestyle Relay

- Haut, Minichowski, Case, and Meszaros combining to take seventh with a time of 3:04.05
