Women's Lacrosse earns win over CSU-Pueblo

SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Catawba women's lacrosse team snapped a seven-game skid, defeating Colorado State Pueblo 19-13 on Wednesday night at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 2-8, while the Thunderwolves drop to 1-5.

Ella McCusker led Catawba with five goals and three assists. Caroline Cox added four goals and an assist with Joey Baillie and Mary Sorvillo each scoring three times. Evie Kauserud stopped a dozen shots in goal for the Lady Indians.

Catawba never trailed as the ladies scored the opening four goals. McCusker opened the scoring at the 10:51 mark and Cox put home back-to-back tallies for the early edge with 4:06 left in the period.

The Thunderwolves made it 4-2 at the end of the first and trailed 7-4 when Catawba went on a 5-0 spurt over a five-minute span midway through the second quarter. Helena Cronmiller got it started with 10:22 remaining in the half and Sorvillo added consecutive tallies for a 10-4 lead. McCusker and Sarah Maier completed the run to make it 12-4 with 4:58 to go in the second.

CSU Pueblo got the final goal of the second quarter then added four more to start the third. Sedona Sargent had the opening three of the second half. Cox stopped the run, but a goal in the final 30 second of the third and the opening minute of the fourth closed the gap for Pueblo to 13-11.

Catawba responded on goals from Baillie, McCusker and Sorvillo to go up 16-11 with 10 minutes left. The Lady Indians allowed just two more goals after surrendering the early tally in the fourth to get the win.

Sargent led Pueblo with three goals. Kate Broom and Caira Lessack each had two goals and an assist. Naomi Price-Burton made seven saves in goal.

For Catawba, Maier caused five turnovers, earned four ground balls and won five draw controls in addition to her two goals. Baillie also won five draw controls.

Catawba travels to Anderson on Saturday, returning to league action with a 3 p.m. start.
