McCormick, S.C. – Catawba women's golf got their 2023-24 season underway at the Savannah Lakes Invitational in South Carolina, wrapping up the third and final day of play with a seventh place finish at 53-over, 917 (Par 72), breaking the team record for 54 holes by 21 strokes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
· Catawba ended the first round of play in ninth place, shooting 23-over, 311 as a team. But they would put that effort behind them, coming out and putting together a +13, 304 in the second round to slide up to eighth.
· Catawba wasn't finished, playing their best golf in the third and final round at +17, 302 to move up another spot into their final position of seventh
· Emily Wellspeak led the way for Catawba, rebounding from an opening-round 79 to post a one-under 71 in round two. She capped off the tournament with an even/72 final round, securing a T-11th finish at +6/222 overall, a personal-best for 54 holes and the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history
· Mary-Paige King would finish T-21st at +9/225, good for a tie for third best in program history, opening play with a +3/75 before following sliding slightly with a +4/76 in round two. But she played her best golf in the third round, posting a +2/74 jump back up in the standings.
· Chloe Crane would wrap up play T-52nd at +22/238, with her best play coming in the second round at +6/78
· Abbie Daquila and Lauren Hackler finished play both T-54th, with Daquila able to shoot +4/76 in the third round and bring her final mark to +23/329 while Hackler put together a solid start, shooting +5/77 in the first round before losing some steam
· Vera Kay also closed the tournament out with her best play, shooting +6/78 in the final round and placing T-65th
· Maddie Vogan rounded out the Catawba lineup, finishing 69th after a +35/251 effort
NOTES
· This was both King and Vogan's first action for Catawba, with the freshmen playing all three rounds in their debut
