Minichowski's second conference title highlights Day 3 of SAC Championships

Greensboro, N.C. —- The Catawba College men's and women's swim teams competed in day three of the South Atlantic Conference Swimming Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center on Friday evening, as Maks Minichowski won the 100 Breast men's SAC title for his second conference crown of the week.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

500 Yard Freestyle 

- Ella Gutenwikcame close to opening Friday with a Catawba win in the women's heat, finishing as the runner-up with a time of 5:01.42, :1.3 seconds behind the winning mark. Fiona Byrne would claim fifth at 5:02.79, while Lillie Martin finished 15thwith a 5:27.62 effort 

- In the men's heat, Elias Hysingearned a fourth place finish with a mark of 4:34.89, while Leon Heiermannnarrowly missed out on the top-10 as took 11th at 4:39.09. Lewis Mikesell (4:46.17) and Kyle Rock (5:01.23) would finish 13th and 19th, respectively  

100 Yard Backstroke  

- Ash Fortin claimed fifth place thanks to a time of 57.39, joined in the top-10 by both Marit Reckmann (9th, 58.82) and Taylor Wilson (10th, 59.07). Brinkley Watson and Diamond Mosley also finished back-to-back in 13th and 14th with times of 1:00.56 and 1:01.73 respectively, as Kenzie Peurifoy rounded out the Catawba women in 16th at 1:02.16 

- Rodrigo Yus Fernandez paced the Catawba men, claiming sixth place with a 51.11 second effort. Isaac Haut finished ninth with a time of 51.22, while Nolan Lacjak was just edged out from making it three Catawba swimmers in the top-10 as he placed 11th, .01 behind the 10thplaced effort  

100 Yard Breaststroke 

- Hannah Koopmans and Gabi Moll represented Catawba in the top-10, taking eighth and 10th with respective times of 1:05.45 and 1:06.03. They paced a group of six Catawba swimmers in the women's heat, followed by Alix Henras-Marouf (13th, 1:07.64), Alana Derringer (14th, 1:08.07), Laurel Keasler (1:08.70), and Bridgette Pearson (19th, 1:09.81) 

- Minichowskiearned Catawba's first win of the evening, emerging victorious in the men's heat with a time of 52.94. Rowan Viles claimed fourth thanks to a 55.08 second effort and Balazs Meszaroswas barely edged out in a battle for fifth place, his sixth place mark of 55.35 just .02 behind the fifth place time of 55.33. Ryan Case and Marshall Wells made it five Catawba swimmers earning top-10 finishes on the men's side, as Case took eighth with a time of 57.29 and Wells placed 10that 57.18 

200 Yard Butterfly 

- Rebecca Possenti led the Catawba delegation in the women's heat, finishing in fifth thanks to a time of 2:08.12. Jolina Frankewas right behind her, earning a sixth place finish with a time of 2:08.59 while Berta Vidal-Carnero took 12th at 2:13.79 

- Joao Oliveira and Alejandro Alvarez both claimed top-five finishes for Catawba in the men's heat, with Oliveira notching fourth thanks to a time of 1:50.73 and Alvarez behind him in fifth with a 1:51.84 mark. Enrique Rodriguezjust missed out on becoming the third Catawba swimmer in the top-10, finishing 11th with a time of 1:58.56 

800 Yard Freestyle Relay 

- Catawba would end the night with both relay teams taking third place in their respective heats. For the women, a team headlined by Koopmans, Fortin, Byrne, and Gutenwik ended the night with a combined effort of 7:45.99, while for the men it was Meszaros, Oliveira, Alvarez, and Hysing putting together a time of 6:51.71 

 

UP NEXT 

- Catawba Swimming will once again be in action at the SAC Championships as they move into their fourth and final day on Saturday
