Softball drops Sunday doubleheader

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College softball team fell late in both ends of a doubleheader against Shippensburg and Lees-McRae on Sunday at Whitley Field in non-conference action.

 

GAME ONE | Shippensburg 8, Catawba 4 - 8 innings

TEAM STATS

- Catawba out-hit Shippensburg 13-12

- The Raiders had five of seven extra-base hits and two of three homers

- SU's pitchers allowed four earned runs on four hits and four walks, striking out three; the Catawba Indian staff allowed eight earned runs on 12 hits and five walks, striking out two

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Molly Strider hit a three-run homer

- Savanna Balderston recorded a 4-for-4 day at the plate

- Madi Taylor went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored

- Bri Herring also had a pair of hits

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Shippensburg's Caitlyn Martell hit a two-run homer to give the Raiders an early lead

 

SECOND INNING

- Aniyah King walked home a run in the second

 

THIRD INNING

- Strider's three-run homer gave Catawba a 4-2 lead after three innings

 

SIXTH INNING

- With the bases loaded and one out, Shippensburg hit a sac fly to pull within a run

- SU's Caitlyn Martell scored on a wild pitch

 

EIGHTH INNING

- The Raiders hit back-to-back singles to lead off the first inning of extras

- Morgan Lindsay hit a go-ahead three-run homer

- Aryanna Briddell's two-out double added an insurance score

 

GAME TWO | Lees-McRae 13, Catawba 4

TEAM STATS

- Lees-McRae out-hit Catawba 12-10

- The Catawba Indians had five of nine extra-base hits in the game, but the Bobcats had the two homers

- Catawba committed four of five errors in the game

- The Catawba Indians had the lone steal

- LMC's Lonna Addison allowed four earned runs on 10 hits and a walk, striking out four; Catawba's staff allowed eight earned runs on 12 hits and six walks, striking out three

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Kary Hales went 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored

- Bri Gallagher was 2-for-4 with a run scored

- Kinsley Caldwell hit a two-run double in her lone at-bat

- Riley Tucker allowed one earned run on four hits in four innings in the start in the circle

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST HALF

- Hannah Foster hit a leadoff homer for Lees-McRae

 

SECOND INNING

- Hales doubled to lead off the second and Strider drove her in on an RBI double

 

THIRD INNING

- Hales knocked a two-out single through the left side to take the 2-1 lead

 

FIFTH INNING

- LMC tied the game on an RBI single in the fifth; a sac fly took the lead

- Caldwell's two-out double returned the lead to Catawba's favor, 4-3

 

SIXTH INNING

- The Bobcats scored eight runs in the sixth to take a comfortable 11-4 lead

 

SEVENTH INNING

- LMC hit a two-run homer in the seventh, leading 13-4

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba hits the road on Wednesday, traveling to UNC Pembroke for a twinbill matchup with the Braves; first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
