Anderson, S.C. —- The Catawba College softball team opened up South Atlantic Conference play with a pair of losses at Anderson University on Sunday afternoon.

GAME ONE | Anderson 9, Catawba 1

TEAM STATS

- Anderson out-hit Catawba 9-2

- The Trojans had three of four extra-base hits in the game

- Catawba committed both errors in the contest

- Anderson's Laken Maxwell allowed one earned run on two hits and one walk, striking out nine; Catawba's staff allowed eight earned runs on nine hits and five walks

SECOND INNING

- Anderson got on the board with a sac fly in the second

THIRD INNING

- Aniyah King walked and Savanna Balderston scored her on an RBI double

- Anderson struck for eight runs in the bottom half of the third and held off Catawba for the two final frames for the mercy-rule victory

- Both teams had two extra-base hits; AU hit the lone homer

- The Catawba Indians once again committed two errors in the field

- Anderson's Morgen Baker-Celis allowed one earned run on 10 hits, striking out eight; Riley Tucker got the tough-luck loss, allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks, striking out one

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Kary Hales went 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and a run scored

- Bri Gallagher added two hits and a run driven in

- Molly Strider doubled

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Hales' two-out double and Gallagher's RBI single gave Catawba an early 1-0 lead

- An error and a double allowed the runner to get to third, where the Trojans capitalized on an RBI groundout

FOURTH INNING

- Anderson took the lead on a solo homer in the fourth

FIFTH INNING

- The Trojans added an insurance score with a sac fly in the fifth

- Catawba returns to Whitley Field on Tuesday, continuing SAC action with a matchup with Mars Hill; first pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m.
