Salisbury, N.C. - The Catawba College Women's Lacrosse team was defeated by the Newberry Wolves in an afternoon matchup at Shuford Stadium on Saturday, falling by a score of 16-6. Catawba now sits 2-7 on the season and 1-2 in Conference action, with Newberry now 5-5 overall
- Newberry outshot Catawba 28-23, with the Wolves putting 24 of their shots on target compared to 15 for Catawba
- Catawba would turn the ball over 19 times, with Newberry giving possession away 17 times themselves. Ground balls would favor the Wolves as well, 23-13
- Catawba had the edge on draw controls, 14-12
- In goal, Catawba's Evie Kauserud made nine stops, though she would suffer the loss for a now 2-7 record on the season. For Newberry, Cheyenne Jess made eight stops on the way to her second win of the season and a now 2-1 record
- Sarah Maier and Jenna Hirvonen each scored a pair of goals, with Charlize Skepple and Caroline Cox also finding the back of the net
- Helena Cronemiller tied for the game-high with two assists, the only two for Catawba in the game
- Maier and Skepple led the team with three shots on goal each, with Ella McCusker and Hirvonen tallying two apiece
- Maier would tie for the game-high with five draw controls, while Cox and Mary Sorvillo each won three of their own
- Hirvonen and Sorvillo each recovered three ground balls, while Maier and Madison Shaffereach caused a pair of turnovers
- Cox opened the scoring just after a minute into the game, converting a free-position shot with 1:04 having passed to give Catawba the first lead of the game
- Newberry got their first goal from Serena Elias at the 10:52 mark, followed just over two minutes later by Hanna Bond as the Wolves took the lead with 8:25 to go in the quarter
- Catawba tied the game up at 2-2 as Hirvonen became the second Catawba player on the day to make the most of a free-position shot, with her goal coming at 5:51
- The Wolves would strike again with another two-goal run, however, with Kelie Saylors putting the visiting side back up 3-2 with 3:16 to go and Marissa Plumer finishing off a man-up situation to give Newberry a 4-2 lead at the :59 second mark
- Newberry's two-goal run to close out the first quarter turned into a 4-0 run as they struck twice again in just over five minutes to open the second frame. Cassell Richardson would score at the 13:21 mark, followed by Emma Jobs with 9:58 on the clock as the Wolves went up 6-2
- Hirvonen converted her second free-position shot of the game to stop the run and pull Catawba back to within three goals just over a minute of Jobs' goal, making it 3-6
- After four scoreless minutes, both sides would add onto their scores in a span of 1:06. Elias scored her second of the game for Newberry at the 4:37 mark, with Maier answering off of an assist from Cronemiller right after with the score at 7-4, Newberry
- The Wolves weren't done in the half, scoring twice in the final minute to cap off a 5-2 quarter. Heather Johnston found the back of the net off of an assist from Richardson with :45 seconds before the half, before Richardson turned scorer at the death with :06 seconds to go. Richardson's goal would send Newberry into the half up 9-4
- Skepple broke the ice in the second half after just over six minutes, tallying a goal at the 8:48 mark after breaking through the Newberry defense
- Plumer and Richardson answered for Newberry in another quick two-goal outburst, with Plumer scoring with 7:22 on the board and Richardson completing her hat-trick 1:08 afterwards
- Maier would again finish off a pass from Cronemiller for her second of the game, with Catawba now trailing 6-11 with 2:26 to go until the final quarter
- Newberry again had an answer however, with Ella Todd making it 12-6 to the visiting side just over a minute after Maier's goal and with 1:12 to go unto the break
- The fourth quarter would prove to be all Newberry, with the Wolves scoring four unanswered in the final 15:00 to close the door on any Catawba comeback attempt
- Todd scored her second straight goal with 10:24 on the clock, followed by Lana Howell at 8:59
- Jobs become the second Wolves player to tally a hat-trick as she scored the final two goals of the game at 8:50 and 6:05, respectively, for the final score of 16-6
- This was the second straight game for Cronemiller with two assists, after she had a her first career pair against Mars Hill on March 9th
- This was the third game this season where Maier has scored twice, and her second straight
- Cox's goal brings her tally to six in her last five games and nine overall, with Skepple's goal her fifth over the last three games
- The Catawba College Women's Lacrosse team is back in action on Saturday, March 23, as they travel to Harrogate, Tenn to take on the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters at 11 a.m.
