Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College men's and women's tennis teams both picked up important wins over visiting Newberry in the respective South Atlantic Conference tennis races on Sunday afternoon at the Johnson Tennis Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Catawba men 7, Newberry 0
- Ryan Little and Edoardo Cecere picked up a 6-2 win in #2 doubles to start the day for the men
- Tyler Juergens and Paul Dekester earned the doubles point for Catawba with a 6-2 win in #3s
- Cecere picked up a 4-2 win when his opponent retired in the opening set
- Mateo Berne followed up with a comeback 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 win in #2s
- Juergens made it a 2-0 day with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win in #3s
- Alessandro Valleta followed suit with a 6-2, 7-5 win in #4s
- Little kept the wins coming with a 6-4, 6-4 win in #5s
- Marcos Castares made it a clean sweep with a 6-3, 6-3 win in #6s
Catawba women 4, Newberry 3
- Newberry took all three doubles matches to begin their match with the Catawba women
- Ami Miya earned a 6-4, 6-4 win in #1 singles to get Catawba on the board
- Isidora Zivkovic followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win in #2s
- Vaishnavi Venkatesh made it three wins in the top three singles matches for Catawba with a 7-6, 6-1 win
- Sofia Hernandez Mera helped Catawba clinch the tight 4-3 match with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 win in #6 singles
