Beach Volleyball closes weekend at Berry

Mount Berry, Ga. —- The Catawba College Beach Volleyball team was in action on Saturday for day two of the Briggs Beach Bash, falling in a morning matchup against the Truett-McConnell Bears before being just edged out by the Berry Vikings in an afternoon showdown as Catawba moves to 3-7 on the season  

 

MATCH ONE | Catawba 0, Truett-McConnell 5 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

-  Hayes Smith andSavanna Corrales led off on Court No. 1, just coming short in the first match by a score of 19-21 before being unable to take the second set, 17-21 

- Morgan Childress and Christina Knottswent back-and-forth against Kaylin McLann and Madyson Dunn in the No. 2 position, with Childress and Dunn going down in the first set but bouncing back with a 21-17 win in the second. However, they were unable to pull out the win in the decisive third set, losing 8-15 

- JJ Quarrels and Kennedy Kimbrobattled hard on Court No. 3, initially going down in a 15-21 opening set. The pair would respond with a dominant second set, 21-9, but were just edged out by the pair of Jordan Roberts and Deomi Valmus in the third and final set by a score of 13-15 

- Katie Willingham and Brooklyn Caulkinsplayed a near-identical sequence to Childress and Knotts' match on Court No. 4, with the pair dropping the first set 16-21 before evening the score with a 21-13 victory in set two. They would become the second Catawba pair, however, to suffer an 8-15 loss in the third set 

- On Court No. 5, Jada Whittal and Ragan Ball became the fourth straight Catawba pair to be just beaten out in three sets, as were able to claim the first by a score of 21-13 but were unable to hang on in sets two and three, 14-21 and 11-15 

 
MATCH TWO | Catawba 2, Berry 3  

HOW IT HAPPENED 

- Smith and Corrales battled hard, but would be defeated on Court No. 1 in three sets. After dropping the first by a score of 17-21, the pair would be able to claim the win in the following set by a score of 21-16, but were unable to close out the opening win as they fell 8-15 in the third frame 

- Knotts and Childress earned Catawba's first win of the day by taking Court. No. 2 in two sets, 21-10 and 21-15. It was the pair's third win in four appearances at the Briggs Beach Bash over the past two days 

- Quarrels and Kimbro kept the momentum going from the No. 3 position as they were able to storm back from a tough 19-21 loss in the opening set with two straight wins, 21-18 and 15-10, to put Catawba ahead 2-1 overall 

- Calkins and Willingham came achingly close to taking the first set on Court No. 3, falling 22-20 after a thrilling affair. They would unfortunately prove to be out of steam, dropping the second set by a score of 7-21 

- Lauren Shepard and Megan Halfordtook to Court No. 5 with both teams locked at 2-2 and seeking a decisive third win. At the end of the day it would be Berry who emerged with the win, taking set one 21-15 and set two 21-16  

 

UP NEXT 

- Catawba Beach Volleyball is back in action on Wednesday, as they welcome Richard Bland College and the Carson-Newman Eagles to the Catawba Beach Courts for Hawaii Day double action. The matchup with Richard Bland is currently set for 1 p.m., with Carson-Newman following at 5 p.m.
