Women's Lacrosse trounces Southern Wesleyan, 17-4

CENTRAL, S.C. — The Catawba College women's lacrosse team notched its second win of the season on Wednesday afternoon, delivering a 17-4 rout of Southern Wesleyan at Childs Field.

 

TEAM STATS

- Catawba (2-1) out-shot Southern Wesleyan (1-5) by a 28-20 margin as the visitors scored on 60.7% of its deliveries

- Both teams were riddled with turnovers as the Catawba Indians forced 25 takeaways but committed 24

- The blue and white went 20-for-24 (.833) on clear attempts while holding the hosts to an 8-for-20 (.400) mark

- SWU had the advantage in draw controls, nabbing 13 compared to Catawba's nine

- Ava Kunza spent the first half in net, earning the decision as Elli Ferraro made six saves with one goal allowed in the final 30 minutes; Ava Lombardi took the loss for SWU with six stops in 46:36 between the pipes

 

INDIVIDUAL STATS

- Kylie Harris slotted home a career-high four goals while leading the Catawba Indians with four draw controls

- Also logging a four-point day, Skylar Mullin collected two goals with a pair of helpers on offense and stacking three ground balls with two caused turnovers defensively

- Mary Sorvillo recorded her seventh career hat trick, scoring via free position shot, live at even strength, and live with an extra-man advantage

- Allison Filosa led the defense with six ground ball pickups while Audrey Adelsberger tied her career high of three caused turnovers

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter

- Harris netted the first two goals of the contest in the opening five minutes, finding paydirt with a free position score before tossing in a feed from Mullin

- Sorvillo and Ella McCusker put free position darts into the back of the net later in the quarter, giving Catawba a strong 4-0 start

- The Warriors cut the gap in half using Rinna Beth Brooker and Ella McCowen goals in the period's last 76 seconds

 

Second Quarter

- Following a quiet start to the second stanza, Sorvillo sent in her second goal of the afternoon to lift the Catawba lead to 5-2

- About two minutes later, the Catawba Indians found paydirt twice in a span of 12 seconds; Michaela Lantz connected with Mullin for a man-up score, then Joey Baillie assisted Grace Virginia Deal for back-to-back rookie goals

- Brooker gave SWU its third tally of the day as Rylie Faircloth balanced it out with an unassisted score six seconds before halftime, helping Catawba pocket an 8-3 edge

 

Third Quarter

- Despite going scoreless for the first 8:26 of the second half, the visitors got back on track when Meredith Marchetti both dished out and scored a goal to bring Catawba's scoring total to double digits

- Deal buried an unassisted strike and Harris launched a free position shot into the twine in quick succession, letting less than 30 seconds expire in between

- Catawba notched its third extra-man conversion shortly before the break with Judy Rose getting onto the scoresheet off an assist from Baillie, stretching the gap to 13-3

 

Fourth Quarter

- Harris kicked off quarter No. 4 with goal No. 4 as Brooker completed a hat trick to cancel out the dart and keep the deficit at 10

- After a successful draw control for Harris, Tati Verity supplied a swift response on the next possession to force SWU to call its third and final timeout

- Taking advantage of continued Warrior fouls and miscues, Sorvillo put a shot to the twine to earn a hatty

- Emily Better snared her first career goal with 29 seconds left to play, putting the finishing touch on a 17-4 rout in favor of the visitors
