Softball offense comes alive in split with #17 Tusculum

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College softball scored 12 runs, including in each of the six innings, in game two of a doubleheader with 17th-ranked Tusculum at Whitley Field in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday.

 

GAME ONE | Tusculum 5, Catawba 0

TEAM STATISTICS

- Tusculum out-hit Catawba 11-4

- The Pioneers recorded two of three extra-base hits and both homers

- Catawba committed the lone error of the ballgame

- TU left six runners on base; the Catawba Indians stranded four

- Tusculum recorded all three stolen bases

- The Pioneer starter did not allow a run in seven innings, allowing four hits and striking out six; Catawba's pitcher allowed five runs on 11 hits and a walk, striking out one

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Brianna Gallagher was 2-for-3

- Brianna Herring doubled

- Kate Holland was saddled with the loss in the circle, allowing five runs in the complete game

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Tusculum scored in the first on a two-out Sammy Jimenez RBI single

 

THIRD INNING

- The Pioneers built their lead on a three-run homer in the third

 

SIXTH INNING

- TU added one more insurance run in the sixth on a solo homer

 

GAME TWO | Catawba 12, Tusculum 4 - 6 innings

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Tusculum 15-8

- The Catawba Indians recorded all six extra-base hits and each of the three homers

- Catawba committed two of three errors in game two

- The Catawba Indians left six runners on base; Tusculum stranded nine

- TU recorded four of six stolen bases

- Catawba's pitcher allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks with four strikeouts; the Pioneers' staff allowed 11 earned runs on 15 hits and four walks, striking out two

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Kary Hales was 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, two RBI and two runs scored

- Courtnee Carter homered and doubled, scoring three runs

- Gallagher went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored

- Micaela Hartman homered; Kirstyn Herman provided three hits

- Alex Baquie got the win in the circle, allowing four runs and striking out four

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Tusculum again scored in the first on a one-out RBI single

- Hales tied the game on an RBI double down the right field line

- Maddy Altiers dropped an RBI single down the line

- Molly Strider made it a 3-1 lead after the first with a one-out RBI groundout

 

SECOND INNING

- Gallagher provided a run on an RBI sac fly, but a second runner trying to score was thrown out at the plate

 

THIRD INNING

- A bases-loaded hit-by-pitch brought the Pioneers back within two in the top of the third

- Hales' leadoff homer restored the 5-2 lead for Catawba

- Hartman scored another on a sac fly, pushing the lead to four

 

FOURTH INNING

- TU scored again in the fourth on a sac fly

- Carter provided another leadoff solo blase for Catawba in the bottom half, leading 7-3

 

FIFTH INNING

- Tusculum loaded the bases with one out and scored on a groundout, but Baquie struck out the potential tying run

- Gallagher brought insurance on a two-out RBI double and Carter scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 9-4

 

SIXTH INNING

- Hartman mashed a three-run homer with two outs in the sixth to enact the mercy rule, giving Catawba the ranked win

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba hits the road next week, traveling to Carson-Newman on Tuesday for 2 and 4 p.m. first pitches
