Salisbury, N.C. —- The 8th-ranked and second-seed Catawba College men's tennis team earned its first NCAA Tournament victory in 29 years on Friday with a 4-1 win over 23rd-ranked and seventh-seed Lander at the Johnson Tennis Center to open the Southeast Regional.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
- Luca Bergonzi and Agustin Mastri picked up a quick 6-4 victory over the top-ranked Bearcat pair
- Mateo Berne and Sebastian Zabala earned a tight 7-5 victory in #3 doubles to pick up the doubles point for Catawba
SINGLES
- Mastri picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over the top-ranked Bearcat singles player
- Marcos Castares earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory at #5 singles
- Ryosuke Inagawa clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 at #4 singles
- Beronzi led 7-5, 5-0 at #3 singles
- Berne lost the opening set but bounced back to force a third frame before the match ended
