CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Catawba College men's swimming team turned in several nationally competitive performances Friday evening against Division I Queens University of Charlotte, highlighted by three individual event victories, multiple NCAA Division II B cuts and lifetime-best performances.
The Catawba Indians fell to the Royals 188-74 in the dual meet but produced impressive results across the freestyle, butterfly and breaststroke events.
Junior Nazar Herashchenko led Catawba with a pair of individual victories, sweeping the distance freestyle events while earning NCAA B cuts in both races. Herashchenko opened his evening with a victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 9:18.43, before returning to win the 500-yard freestyle in 4:30.02.
Junior Jakey Hutchinson added another victory for Catawba in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing first with an NCAA B-cut time of 47.18. His performance also bettered last season's NCAA Division II championship invitation time.
Hutchinson continued his strong showing in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing second overall in 20.05 to secure another NCAA B cut. Senior Ryan Case followed in fourth with a time of 20.69.
Sophomore Jules Remy delivered a lifetime-best performance in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing second in 1:38.78 and earning an NCAA B cut. Remy also placed third in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:04.89 and third in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:51.05.
Freshman Jonathan Vogt added another lifetime-best performance for the Catawba Indians, clocking 56.26 in the 100-yard breaststroke to finish fourth. Vogt also placed fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:07.28.
Junior Alessandro Bre contributed a pair of strong performances in the backstroke events, finishing third in the 100-yard backstroke in 50.71 and fourth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:53.47.
Junior Lassi Niemi added an NCAA B cut in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing fifth with a time of 48.96. He also placed fourth in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:50.91.
Catawba also received a strong showing from sophomore Lincoln Council, who finished third in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:30.15 and fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:39.36.
Catawba closed the evening with a runner-up finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay as Eryk Osobka-Morawski, Hutchinson, Case and Niemi combined for a time of 1:21.07.
The performances against Division I competition provided an early-season benchmark for the Catawba Indians, who continue to build toward the championship portion of their 2026-27 campaign.
Catawba returns to action 1 p.m. Oct. 16 at Wingate.
