MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — The Catawba College women's golf team enjoyed a dazzling start at the LR/Dunes West Intercollegiate on Monday, earning a fourth-place standing with two rounds close to completion.
Catawba leads four South Atlantic Conference opponents and follows directly behind 25th-ranked Lincoln Memorial. The squad shot 316 in the first round and left off at 24-over-par with 1-2 holes remaining in the second round.
Each podium position is currently occupied by a different conference as No. 18 Erskine (CC) tops the standings with No. 6 North Georgia (PBC) second, then the Railsplitters (SAC) in third. Camryn Wright, representing UNG as an individual, leads the pack at two-over through 34 holes.
RESULTS
T-10. Mary-Paige King (148 through 35 holes, +9)
T-31. Hannah Waddell (156 through 35, +15)
T-31. Sara Kristinsdottir (150 through 34, +15)
T-47. Rachel Carlson (155 through 34, +18)
T-52. Taya Buxton (155 through 34, +20)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- King had the team's best round of the day, logging a three-over 75 in the opener that played a major role in her top-10 position
- Waddell carded 38s on the front and back of Round 1, trailing King by a shot before running into trouble during the second 18 holes; nonetheless, the Salisbury native is just six strokes out of the Top 10
- Kristinsdottir joins Waddell in 31st place following a first-round 80 that set up a potentially-better Round 2, which the Icelandic sophomore left off of with a birdie on hole No. 2
- Carlson birdied two of her last three holes before nightfall, setting up a favorable front nine as action resumes tomorrow morning; her current five-over score may wind up being the squad's lowest in Round 2
- Buxton has experienced a similar bounce-back performance that saw her round-one 86 evolve into a six-over standing with two holes to go in the second 18
