Softball’s pitching shines in DH sweep of Emory & Henry

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College softball team allowed just one run across 14 innings of play in its South Atlantic Conference doubleheader sweep of Emory & Henry on Saturday at Whitley Field, pushing its win streak to eight games.

GAME ONE | Catawba 3, Emory & Henry 0

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Emory & Henry 7-3

- The Catawba Indians had the only two extra-base hits of the game

- The Wasps committed the two errors in the contest

- Both teams left five runners on base

- Catawba's starter threw a complete-game shutout on three hits and two walks, striking out six; E&H's staff allowed two earned runs on seven hits, striking out five

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Alex Baquie tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits and two walks

- Abbey Nixon drove in two runs on a single

- Altiers reached on an error to lead off the second inning

- Poole's two-out triple scored the game's first run

- Three consecutive singles loaded the bases with one out in the fourth for Catawba

- Nixon dropped a two-out single right on the right-field foul line to score two and give the Catawba Indians insurance

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIFTH INNING

- Flynn singled up the middle with one out in the fifth

- A hit-and-run moved the shortstop out of position, allowing Ruscoe's base hit to move Flynn up to third with still one out

- Gallagher came through with an RBI base hit to the right side for the first run of the game

- Altiers' opposite-field double scored another as Catawba took a 2-0 lead

SIXTH INNING

- E&H's Hannah Booth scored the Wasps' first run of the afternoon on a leadoff homer to left field

SEVENTH INNING

- Two singles put the tying run in scoring position and the go-ahead on base for Emory & Henry in the seventh

- Holland forced a flyout to center field for the first out of the inning

- On a ground ball hit to the left side, Jordan McCorkle made a diving stop, touched third base and fired a strike to first for the game-ending double play

UP NEXT

- Catawba returns to Whitley Field on Tuesday, hosting Mars Hill in a matchup of two teams in the top half of the SAC standings

- First pitch for game one is set for 2 p.m.
