Women's Golf falls to #1 Wingate in SAC medal match play semifinal

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Catawba College women's golf team bowed out of Tuesday's medal match play at the South Atlantic Conference Championship in the semifinal round, falling 5-0 to top-seeded, top-ranked Wingate at The Preserve at Verdae.

RESULTS
1. Lauren Sutcliffe (WU) def. Sara Kristinsdottir (CAT), 11 UP
2. Olivia Meinecke (WU) def. Rachel Carlson (CAT), 5 UP
3. Amely Bochaton (WU) def. Hannah Waddell (CAT), 5 UP
4. Haley Paramore (WU) def. Mary-Paige King (CAT), 2 UP
5. Jackie Gonzalez Howard (WU) def. Taya Buxton (CAT), 1 UP

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After going even through three holes, Kristinsdottir posted bogeys as Sutcliffe birdied simultaneously to create a hefty gap; the Icelander finished with an 83
- Back-to-back double bogeys by Meinecke early in the round put Carlson ahead by three, but five straight bogeys by the Catawba Indian put her behind and the Bulldog never surrendered the lead in a 74-79 result
- Waddell, facing the No. 1 player in Division II, put her matchup on upset alert early as Bochaton double-bogeyed the first hole and possessed an unstable one-shot lead through 13; however, Waddell suffered a triple bogey on the 14th while her foe stood firm in a 73-78 decision
- King jumped out to a four-stroke advantage on the front nine by staying steady as Paramore struggle before the tables turned late in the back nine and, with the round tied, the Catawba Indian junior bogeyed while her opponent birdied in a 78-80 loss
- Buxton and Gonzalez Howard had very similar rounds with the Wingate representative holding a slight lead for most of it, but Buxton assumed her first lead on the 16th with a birdie against a bogey; in the final two holes, Gonzalez Howard went -1 while Buxton was +1 for a one-stroke margin at 78-79 to give Wingate a clean sweep

Wingate advanced to the championship round and defeated Lincoln Memorial, 3.5-1.5, to win its second consecutive SAC Championship crown.

UP NEXT
Catawba learns its postseason fate later this month, seeking the program's first-ever team berth into the NCAA Regional Championship; the last individual qualifier was Kelsey Babos in 2010. The entire field will be announced in the Division II Women's Golf Selection Show airing Sunday, Apr. 26, at 5 p.m. on ncaa.com.
