HICKORY, N.C. -- Catawba overcame a two-goal deficit to stun host Lenoir-Rhyne 3-2 in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action on Wednesday at the Moretz Complex. The Catawba Indians raise their record to 6-2-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the SAC. The Bears, who just missed being ranked in the DII top 25 poll, fall to 5-3 and 3-2.
Down 2-0 after the opening half that saw around a 30-minute lightning delay midway through the period, Catawba rallied in the final 45 minutes. Nico Morillo got Catawba's first goal as he redirected a cross from Tom Savigar to the back post in the 61st minute.
The Indians then took advantage of a pair of rebounds to take the lead with tallies just two minutes apart. Savigar scored the equalizer off a rebound from a long shot by Christian Dibb. Savigar just beat LR keeper Camden Coleman to the rebound in the 76th minute.
It would be Savigar again just two minutes later that stole a ball from the Bear defense and dribbled past Coleman. His initial shot was saved by a defender, but Salano Birch was there to fire in the rebound to put the Indians on top.
Lenoir-Rhyne held a 14-7 edge in shots, but put just two on target. Benjamin Gnieser put home a cross to the back post by Harri Rowe in the third minute and Jaheim Smith found the goal in the 39th minute for the 2-0 lead. Coleman had the lone save by any keeper.
Catawba is at home on Saturday, hosting 12th-ranked Limestone at 5:30 p.m.
