Despite Loss to Wingate, Volleyball Moves on to SAC Tournament

WINGATE, N.C. -- Catawba fell to host Wingate over four sets in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday night at Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs gain a share of the league title, moving to 22-3 overall and 15-3 in the SAC after the 25-18, 23-25, 25-16 and 25-22 victory. The Catawba Indians fall to 11-13 and 8-10 and grab the final spot for the upcoming SAC Tournament.

Allison Bryant put down a dozen kills and recorded 14 digs for Catawba. Kylie Morgan added eight kills and Raytchelle Miranda seven. Jordan Gore had four blocks, three solo, and six kills. Kary Hales had 15 digs and Dara Kane 23 assists.

Wingate never trailed in the opening set, moving out to an early 9-3 edge. The Lady Indians closed within 12-9 before the Bulldogs pushed the edge to 20-13.

Catawba came out on top of a tight second set that was tied 14 times with seven lead changes. Wingate erased a 22-21 deficit on kills by Sophie Schaff and Shannon Kasprak, but Catawba tied the set on a service error following a timeout. Gore put the Lady Indians up 24-23 with a kill and Bryant served an ace to end the set.

Wingate moved ahead midway through the third set. Up 12-10, the Bulldogs went on a 9-2 run that was capped by an ace from Maggie Young. Miranda had a kill to give Catawba a 17-15 edge in the set four, but the Bulldogs battled and went up for good at 19-18 after a kill from Young. A late kill from Gore and a Wingate error closed the gap to 24-22 before Schaff killed off the final point.

Quin Sutphin led five players who reached double digits in kills with 15 and added five blocks. Molly Lambillotte had 13 kills and 17 digs, while Young posted 11 kills and seven blocks. Kasprak handed out 58 assists and Taryn Pryce had 23 digs.

Catawba will travel to face top-seeded Tusculum on Tuesday in the first round of the SAC Tournament. The Lady Indians won the tiebreaker over Limestone by virtue of their win in the lone meeting this season. Tusculum grabbed the top seed after beating Wingate twice and splitting with Anderson.
