Late Goal Helps Mens Soccer Draw With Anderson

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba salvaged a tie with visiting Anderson in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action on Saturday night at the Frock Soccer Complex. The teams battled to a 1-1 draw with the Catawba Indians going to 4-0-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the SAC. The Trojans move to 2-1-1 and 0-1-1.

Catawba was able to come up with an equalizer in the final five minutes. Salano Birch took a through ball from Simone Trentin, stepped by the keeper and put the ball home in the middle of the goal to knot the match. His goal at the 86:31 mark sent the contest to extra time.

Anderson had scored first, breaking the ice in the 68th minute. Eloy Allimadi grabbed a pass from Bryce Goodwyn and angled a shot from the left inside the far post.

Neither team could break the ice over 20 minutes of overtime. Catawba held a 16-11 edge in shots with the Trojans taking three corners to just a pair for the Indians.

Gianluca Tommasi played the opening half for Catawba and posted a pair of saves. Zak Stiffler went the final 65 minutes and also had two saves. Gal Elyashiv recorded three saves for Anderson.

Catawba heads to Carson-Newman next Saturday for a 5 p.m. match with the Eagles.
