SALISBURY, NC. -- A series of events in the final seconds pushed host Catawba to a 2-1 win over Mount Olive in men's soccer action on Thursday night at the Frock Soccer Complex. It was the opener for both teams.
After a stoppage for an injury with 23 seconds remaining, play resumed with a drop ball about five yards outside the Mount Olive box. As the kick went towards the Trojan goal it found its way into the back of the net for an own goal game-winner with 18 seconds left.
The teams played to a scoreless half with Mount Olive taking the lead in the 58th minute. Roberto Hernandez took a pass from Alfie Pope for the opening goal. Catawba came right back eight minutes later. An initial shot from Simone Trentin was saved, but the rebound bounced to the top of the box where Christian Dibb laced a one-timer for the equalizer.
Mount Olive had a goal called back in the 86th on an offside call. The match was physical with 31 fouls and six yellow cards. Gianluca Tommasi posted three saves for Catawba, while Gage Bernard saved a ball off the line in the 43rd minute. Michael DeLeo notched six saves for the Trojans.
Catawba is back in action at home on Sunday, hosting Barton at 7 p.m.
