LMU SOCCER COMPLEX – The No. 8 ranked Catawba Women's Soccer team remained undefeated following their road trip to Lincoln Memorial. Helen Summerell notched a hat trick to secure a 5-0 win over the Railsplitters in Saturday's South Atlantic Conference match.
Catawba (12-0-1) took a commanding 4-0 lead into halftime and never looked back, closing Lincoln Memorial (1-10) out in the second half while Summerell added her third goal and Catawba's fifth of the game late.
Meanwhile, the victory was Catawba's 10th straight clean sheet this season, as they allowed just three shots while managing 20 of their own on the other end. Sierra Davis was only called into action once to make a save, while for Lincoln Memorial Bente Latenstein finished with seven of her own.
Summerell got things going quickly, as she struck twice in a six-minute span to give Catawba an early two-goal lead. A quick set by Catawba that began at midfield in the seventh minute saw Kasey Hahn pick out Hannah Dunn, who pivoted and found the run of her fellow striker in behind the Lincoln Memorial back line. Summerell made no mistake, going low to beat the keeper at the far corner.
Dunn again played the role of provider as she nodded a long ball from Kelly Havens down to Summerell in the box which she chipped over an onrushing Latenstein in the 13th minute to make it 2-0. Summerell grabbed an assist of her own in the 25th minute, as she wove her way down the sideline following a throw in. She then burst into the box and sent a low cross through several players all the way to Sydney Jimmo, who was left on an island and easily converted the opportunity.
Things got worse for the Railsplitters in the 29th minute, as a Megan Snider challenge on Dunn just on the edge of the 18-yard box drew Snider the only yellow card of the game and handed Catawba a free kick on the white outline of the box. Kasey Hahn stepped up and rifled the chance home into the far side of net to make it 4-0.
Catawba settled down but kept the pressure on in the second half, and Summerell put things away for good in the 85th minute when she scored her third goal of the game by pouncing on a loose ball and blasting her shot home from six yards out to make it 5-0. It notched her first hat trick of the season, along with the assist for Sydney Jimmo, gave her seven points in the contest.
Catawba is back at home for Breast Cancer Awareness and Pink Out night on Wednesday, October 12th against Limestone at 7:30PM ET.
