SALISBURY, N.C. -- Javeon Jones had 21 points, 10 rebounds and five steals to help spark Catawba to an 85-75 win over Belmont Abbey on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The win pushed the Catawba Indians to 2-1 on the season, while the Crusaders drop to 0-3.
Catawba put four players in double figures. DeAngelo Epps and Peyton Gerald each followed Jones with 16 points, while Kris Robinson netted all 11 of his points after the break.
The Indians opened fast and jumped to a 23-8 edge in the opening eight minutes. Belmont Abbey would rally and lead 43-36 at the break. Catawba would stay behind until Robinson canned a three-pointer with 9:42 remaining that gave the hosts a 60-59 lead.
Catawba continued to pull away from there. Two free throws by Jones with 3:45 left gave the Indians a 76-63 edge. Belmont Abbey closed to within 76-69 with just over two minutes to go, but Catawba did enough to hold on.
Each team committed 20 turnovers with Catawba recording 16 steals. The Indians enjoyed a 39-32 edge on the glass and shot 52%, going 8-for-20 from behind the arc.
Wade Jackson led the Crusaders with 17 points with KJ Garrett adding 16. Taylor Mason had 13 points and seven boards, while Ryan Maslow came off the bench to score a dozen by hitting four three-pointers.
Catawba is home again over the weekend, hosting Erskine on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and North Greenville on Saturday at 3 p.m.
