Tough Shooting Day Upends Men's Basketball at Chowan

MURFREESBORO, N.C. -- Catawba could not find its shooting touch on Saturday afternoon, falling 73-65 on the road at Chowan. The Catawba Indians fall to 4-2 on the year with the Hawks moving to 1-3.

 

Catawba made just 32% of its shots on the day and went just 5-for-26 (19%) from behind the arc. Chowan also beat the Indians bad on the boards, holding a 55-38 edge.

 

Javeon Jones led Catawba with 23 points and Adrian Scarborough followed with 16. The duo made 13 of Catawba's 22 shots. DeAngelo Epps pulled down nine rebounds and recorded four streals.

 

Catawba started well, scoring the first eight points, and led much of the first half. Chowan was down 21-13 with six minutes left in the half when the Hawks used an 11-0 run to take its first lead. The Hawks led 33-30 at the break.

 

The Indians stayed with a basket or two most of the second half, but were unable to retake the lead. A 9-2 run would push Chowan out to a 58-49 edge with just under eight minutes to play and kept a comfortable margin until the final horn.

 

Christian Koonce came off the bench for Chowan to post a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Preston Le Gassick also netted a dozen points with Daylan Askew adding 11. Cheick Traore pulled down 14 rebounds.

 

Catawba is at home on Wednesday, hosting second-ranked Augusta at 7 p.m.
