Women's Basketball Shakes Off Sluggish Start To Rally Past ECSU

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba overcame a sluggish first half and rallied to grab a 69-62 win over visiting Elizabeth City State on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The win keeps the Catawba Indians undefeated at 6-0, while the Vikings fall to 4-2.

 

Janiya Downs led Catawba with 21 points, canning a trio of three-pointers and going 8-of-10 at the line. Sara McIntosh followed with 16 points and Lyrik Thorne 11. Nala Baker chipped in with nine points, including six in a fourth-quarter run that put Catawba on top.

 

Catawba made just four of its first 23 shots and trailed 27-13 midway through the second quarter. The Lady Indians scored eight straight points after the media timeout to pull within 27-21. ECSU would recover and led 32-23 at the break.

 

The Vikings went up by 14 early in the third quarter, but Catawba began to eat into the deficit in the final five minutes of the quarter. McIntosh had a three-point play another basket to pull the Lady Indians within 47-43 and when Downs canned a three-pointer Catawba was down just two at 50-48 going into the final period.

 

Elizabeth City went up by seven to open the fourth quarter before a three-pointer from Downs and jumpers from McIntosh and Baker tied the game with 4:39 left. Two free throws from Downs with 3:36 remaining gave Catawba its first lead. Baker added a jumper for a 61-57 edge and hit three-of-four free throws to push the Lady Indians to a 64-59 lead with 39 seconds left. Catawba salted the game away by hitting four-of-six at the line over the final 35 seconds.

 

After hitting just 9-of-37 shots in the first half, Catawba canned 12-of-19 in the final 20 minutes. ECSU shot 46% for the game and held a 42-30 edge on the glass, but suffered 29 turnovers. Catawba went to the line a dozen more times and made 23-of -31 attempts.

 

Sirenna Pitts recorded a double-double for the Vikings with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Alanis Hill added 15 points and NyAsia Blango 10.

 

Catawba travels to Carson-Newman on Monday for a 5:30 tip-off with the Lady Eagles.
