NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Salano Birch snapped a 1-1 tie with just over 15 minutes to play to lift the Catawba Indians' men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over host Newberry on Wednesday night. The win improves Catawba to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Wolves fall to 1-3 and 0-1.
Catawba led 1-0 at the break. Sebastia Cerda-Tous put the Indians on top in the 12th minute, beating the keeper with a shot to lower right side of the goal.
Newberry equalized just five minutes into the second half. Filip Tmusic put home the goal. The Indians would net the winner about 20 minutes later. Birch took a pass from Bautista Vecchi-Ramello and beat the keeper low left in the 73rd minute.
Catawba defense surrendered just one shot after retaking the lead. Zak Stiffer made the save, one of four he made on the night. Catawba out-shot Newberry 15-6 with 10 of those on goal. Pablo Cubas made eight saves for the Wolves.
Catawba returns to action on Saturday, hosting USC Aiken in a non-conference tilt at 7 p.m. at the Frock Soccer Complex.
