SALISBURY, N.C. – It took nearly 65 minutes for the No. 9 Catawba women's soccer team to get on the board against the Chowan Hawks, but junior defender Kelly Havens cleaned up a loose ball on a corner kick for the game-winning goal in the non-conference matchup on Wednesday night.
Catawba applied relentless pressure the entire game, but Chowan deployed a defensive-heavy formation and strategy to slow down the red-hot Catawba Indians. The home team sent out a total of 27 shots and took 16 corner kicks in the match compared to just one shot and one corner kick by the Hawks.
Ten of Catawba's 27 shots were on goal as the ninth-ranked Indians had a plethora of scoring chances. Helen Summerell, Katie Webb, and Amery Skinner sent shots on goal in the first half, and captain Katie Beck had a header miss wide left as well as another header hit off the crossbar in the 22nd minute. Both teams went to the half in a scoreless tie.
The women's soccer team continued their relentless pursuit to break through as Webb sent a shot on goal in the first minute and a half into the second stanza. In the 50th minute, Kelly Havens nearly put Catawba on the board when she tapped a loose ball on a corner kick towards the net, but it was booted away at the last moment by a Chowan defender.
Two minutes later, on another corner kick set, Katie Beck and Havens each had an opportunity, but Beck's shot was blocked, and Havens' attempt was knocked away by a defender once again.
Finally, in the 65th minute, Havens hit paydirt when she secured a loose ball near the goal line and punched it into the net for her second goal of the season.
This was all Catawba needed to secure the win as Chowan barely got anything going into their own attacking third for the entirety of the game.
Catawba moved to 7-0 on the season and will play again at home on Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. against Bluefield State.
