SALISBURY, N.C. -- Janiya Downs scored 13 of her game-high 21 points in the a pivotal fourth quarter as Catawba stayed unbeaten at home with a 68-60 win over Anderson in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians, who are receiving votes in the WBCA Division II poll, improve to 15-3 overall and 9-1 in league play. The Trojans drop to 10-8 and 4-4.
Catawba led 22-17 after a quarter then made just four shots and scored nine points in the second quarter and trailed 39-31 at the break. Anderson pushed its lead to 14 early in the third quarter, but Catawba 10-0 run over a four-minute span to close within 48-44.
Trailing 56-49 entering the final 10 minutes, Catawba would dominate the final period. The Lady Indians held Anderson scoreless for nearly eight minutes and grabbed a 66-56 edge. Downs scored seven straight points to put Catawba on top 58-56 with 7:16 to go.
Catawba had struggled shooting in the middle periods, going just 8-for-26, but canned 7-of-10 in the final period with Downs connecting on 5-of-6 with five rebounds and four steals. The Lady Indians out-scored Anderson 19-4 in the fourth quarter.
Downs finished with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. She added four steals and three assists. Lyrik Thorne followed with 20 points. Diamond McDowell had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Anderson. Brittney Stafford tossed in 16 with five assists.
Anderson shot 50% in the opening half then dropped to 30% in the second and made only 2-of-12 in the final quarter. Catawba held a 40-31 edge on the boards.
Catawba is on the road Wednesday, traveling to 14th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne at 5:30 p.m.
