Men's and Women's Swimming dominate October Swim Fest in rout of Lenoir-Rhyne

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College men's and women's swimming teams swept each of the 28 events over Lenoir-Rhyne Thursday evening, defeating the Bears in Catawba's first-ever October Swim Fest. The Catawba women topped Lenoir-Rhyne 214-46, while the men earned a 205-56 victory.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

200 Medley Relay

- Catawba's women kicked off the night with a win in the 200 Medley Relay, as Taylor Wilson, Hannah Koopmans, Brinkley Watson and Marit Reckmann finished in 1:47.55, while Diamond Mosley, Alix Henras-Marouf, Rebecca Possenti and Bridgette Pearson finished just behind in 1:49.87

- Catawba's team of Rodrigo Yus Fernandez, Rowan Viles, Balazs Meszaros and Maks Minichowski earned a victory in the men's 200 Medley relay, finishing in 1:33.76, while the team of Nolan Lacjak, Marshall Wells, Joao Oliveira and Isaac Haut took second place with a time of 1:37.06

 

1000 Yard Freestyle

- Fiona Byrne earned a win in the 1000 Free with a time of 10:36.40

- Elias Hysing came away victorious on the men's side, finishing in 9:53.48

 

200 Yard Freestyle

- Freshman Ella Gutenwik picked up a win in the 200 Free with a time of 1:41.35

- Fellow freshman Minichowski finished first in the men's 200 Free in 1:41.35, with Alejandro Alvarez not far behind at 1:45.00

 

100 Yard Backstroke

- Catawba earned all top three finishes on the women's 100 Back heat, as Wilson won with a 59.66, and Ashley Fortin and McKenzie Peurifoy rounded out the all-Catawba top-three

- Catawba took each of the three top finishes on the men's side as well, as Yus Fernandez earned the win, finishing in 52.20, with Lacjak and Ryan Case not far behind

 

100 Yard Breaststroke

- Koopmans, Gabi Moll and Laurel Keasler formed the Catawba trio that finished 1-2-3 in the Women's 100 Breaststroke

- Meszaros was the winner on the Men's side with a time of 57.50

 

200 Yard Butterfly

- Possenti earned a nearly seven-second win in the 200 Fly, with a time of 2:10.15

- Oliveira picked up another win for the Catawba Indians with a 1:55.26 time

 

50 Yard Freestyle

- Reckmann sprinted her way to a win in the 50 Free, less than a half-second ahead of Henras–Marouf

- Freshman Case raced to a 21.71 time to earn a win on the men's side

 

100 Yard Freestyle

 - Freshmen Gutenwik and Minichowski picked up two more Catawba wins in the 100 Free, finishing in 54.48 and 45.95, respectively

 

200 Yard Backstroke

- Wilson was third consecutive Catawba freshman to win their heat, taking the 200 Back event with a time of 2:09.14

- Yus Fernandez beat out teammate Lacjak on the Men's side with a time of 1:55.86

 

200 Yard Backstroke

- Koopmans finished just over a tenth of a second ahead of Moll in the 200 Breast, with 2:24.13 and 2:24.24 times, respectively

- Viles was almost five seconds ahead of the rest of his heat with a 2:10.62

 

500 Yard Freestyle

- Gutenwik cruised to a win in the 500 Free with a time of 5:10.87

- Alvarez and Hysing finished 1-2 with the sub-five-minute times for the men

 

100 Yard Butterfly

- Reckmann posted a sub-minute time of 59.61 in the Women's 100 Fly

- Meszaros nearly broke 50 seconds on the men's side with a 50.62

 

200 Yard IM

- Koopmans earned another win, finishing the 200-Yard IM in 2:13.59, just ahead of Moll and Fortin

- Oliveira, Alvarez and Yus Fernandez finished 1-2-3 ahead of the Bears' pack

 

200 Yard Freestyle Relay

- Catawba capped the night with two more wins to seal the sweep of the evening

- Watson, Reckmann, Henras-Marouf and Pearson finished in 1:39.24

- Minichowski, Meszaros, Case and Haut emerged victorious in the final event of the night with a time of 1:25.80

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba men's and women's swimming return to Johnson Pool next Friday, Oct. 20, hosting Emory & Henry for a dual meet starting at 5 p.m.
