Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College football team rushed for a season-high 331 yards in their come-from-behind win over Barton College on Homecoming and Senior Day at Shuford Stadium in South Atlantic Conference football action Saturday afternoon.
TEAM STATS
- Catawba gained 26 first downs to Barton's 17
- The Catawba Indians was 6-of-12 on third down, while holding Barton to 2-of-7 on third down
- BC out-gained Catawba 406-392 in total yards
- The Catawba Indians out-gained Barton's SAC-leading rushing attack 331-162
- Barton threw for 244 yards while holding Catawba to 61 yards passing
- The Bulldogs were flagged 10 times for 100 yards; Catawba played yet another clean game with just two penalties for 15 yards
- Barton recorded three sacks while allowing just one offensively
- Catawba forced the one turnover on the night on a late-game interception
- The Catawba Indians won the time-of-possession battle 34:33 to 25:27
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Malcolm Wilson led the way on the ground, taking 20 carries for 173 yards and a touchdown
- Marquece Williams also ran for 100 yards, going for 104 yards and three touchdowns on the ground
- Bo Pryor caught a team-high three passes for 34 yards
- Deno Wardlow recorded the game-sealing interception
- Christian Campbell had four tackles and a sack
- Evan Simons tallied a team-high seven tackles
- Jakarri Martin II and Christian Bennett were just behind with six tackles apiece
- Bryson Sims nailed a 42-yard field goals and all three extra-point attempts
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Barton took their opening drive 75 yards in nine plays, capped by Jordan Terrell's 20-yard touchdown run
- Wilson ripped off a 48-yard run to highlight Catawba's response - a four-play 75-yard drive as Williams punched it in with a 15-yard touchdown score to tie the game at 7
- Catawba forced a punt and drove into Bulldog territory, but Sims' 44-yard field goal attempt missed
- Barton's Tyler Flippen found a wide-open Isaiah Jacobs for a 61-yard touchdown pass to take a 14-7 lead with under a minute to go in the quarter
SECOND QUARTER
- Catawba's 12-play drive ended with points as Sims hit a 42-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 14-10
- Barton built on their lead with Terrell's second score of the day, capping a 10-play drive
- Catawba punted, but Barton 's fourth down try from Catawba territory fell incomplete
- The Catawba Indians tried to get into scoring range in the closing seconds of the half, but the Bulldogs sacked Brown on Catawba's final try of the half
THIRD QUARTER
- Catawba went on a 10-play drive to start the second half, but Sims' 47-yard field goal try was unsuccessful
- The Catawba Indians bounced back by forcing a punt and going on a 10-play touchdown drive
- Wilson scored from four yards out and Pryor converted the two-point try on a direct snap to pull within 21-18 at the 2:34 mark
FOURTH QUARTER
- The Catawba defense forced yet another three-and-out
- Catawba took the lead on Williams' second TD with 11 minutes to go
- Barton was forced to its third straight three-and-out and Catawba utilized the ground game again to take a 32-21 lead with under six minutes to go on Williams' third score
- The Bulldogs showed life on their ensuing drive, striking on a 13-yard pass to Jayden Flood-Brown in under just two minutes
- Barton then forced a Catawba punt and hit Jacobs for a 39-yard gain on the first play of the drive
- Wardlow picked off Flippen's pass and returned it 50 yards into Barton territory
- Catawba converted a 4th & 2 to essentially end the game with a kneel down
