Harrogate, Tenn. —- The Catawba College women's volleyball team played its second consecutive tightly contested match on the road, but came out victorious in a close five sets at Lincoln Memorial Friday night in South Atlantic Conference action.
TEAM STATS
- Lincoln Memorial had 67 kills to Catawba's 50
- The Railsplitters hit .210 to Catawba's .133
- LMU had 59 assists to Catawba's 44
- The Catawba Indians had the advantage in service aces 6-3
- Lincoln Memorial enjoyed a slight edge in digs 68-67
- The Railsplitters had 22 service errors to just eight for Catawba
- LMU had 12 blocks to Catawba's nine
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Mailie Chretien led Catawba with 15 kills, 14 digs and a team-high three aces
- Lauren Patrick added eight kills on just 12 swings
- Chloe Danielson and Katrina Misra chipped in nine kills apiece
- Siena Roethler recorded 40 assists on the night
- Riley Hill collected a game-high 26 digs
- Jordan Danielson pitched in a team-high three blocks
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- The teams played evenly through the first half of the set, as the sides were tied 12-12
- A Chloe Danielson kill and back-to-back Chretien aces jumpstarted a Catawba run to go up 16-12
- LMU took four of five points as they clawed back to within a point at 17-16
- Three straight Railsplitter errors returned the cushion to Catawba's lead, holding a 22-18 lead after Patrick's kill
- The team's traded points from there on, as a service error clinched the first set for Catawba
SECOND SET
- Catawba got off to another fast start in the second set, leading 7-4 early on after an LMU error
- Three straight Railsplitter points tied the set at 8 points apiece
- A kill from Patrick and a pair of kills from Jordan Danielson put Catawba back in front, but the Railsplitters answered right back to tie the set at the midway point
- Catawba opened up another three-point lead at 15-12 before LMU clawed back and the teams traded points with ties at 20, 21, 22 and 23
- LMU recorded back-to-back kills to take set two 25-23
THIRD SET
- LMU started the third set on the right foot, leading 4-2 early on
- Catawba tied the set and the teams began trading points again with ties at 4, 6, 7 and 8
- The Catawba Indians rattled off eight points in a row, turning a slight 16-15 lead into a dominant 23-15 advantage including two aces from Devyn Berg
- LMU would not got away as the Railsplitters claimed seven of eight points to close the deficit to 24-22
- Misra's kill sealed the set three win for Catawba
FOURTH SET
- A Roethler kill and an LMU attack error opened up a slight 5-3 advantage for Catawba early on in the fourth
- The teams once again traded points with the set deadlocked at 15
- Three straight Railsplitter kills gave the home team an 18-15 lead
- Catawba recorded five straight points to earn two match points with a 24-22 lead
- LMU earned four straight points to stave off the defeat and force a decisive fifth set
FIFTH SET
- LMU took the first point of the final set, but Catawba took the next three to take an early lead
- The Railsplitters bounced back, taking five of six points to take a 6-4 lead after Abigail Kesler's kill
- After Catawba tied the set at 7, LMU responded with four more straight points, holding an 11-7 advantage
- Catawba fought their way back once again, earning six of eight points to turn a 12-9 deficit into a 15-14 match point opportunity
- LMU answered back with a Maggie Sanderson kill to tie the final set at 15
- Chloe Danielson and Chretien kills put an exclamation mark on the Catawba win, earning its first road conference win of the season
