MARS HILL, N.C. -- Catawba overcame a five-point deficit in the final four minutes and grabbed an 84-81 win over Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Chambers Gym. The Catawba Indians up their record to 18-6 overall and 13-2 in the SAC. The Lions fall to 8-17 and 3-12.
Mars Hill led 76-71 with 3:43 to go, but it wasn't enough to deny the Indians. After a Javeon Jones basket, Kris Robinson tied the game on a three-pointer with 2:58 remaining. Robinson would put Catawba on top at the 2:24 mark with a pair of free throws. Prosper Obidiebube tied the game for Mars Hill, but Jones connected on two more free throws with 1:15 left to put Catawba back on top.
Adrian Scarborough came up with a steal and dunk with 50 seconds remaining to give the Indians an 82-78 lead. Kory Davis pulled Mars Hill within a point on a three-pointer with 37 seconds left. The Lions forced a turnover with 10 seconds remaining then gave the ball back on a miscue with four seconds to go. Kaleb Wallace added the final points from the line with a second left.
Robinson led four double-figure scorers with 17 points for Catawba, canning five three-pointers. Jones added 15 points and seven rebounds. Wallace and Peyton Gerald each scored a dozen with Gerald grabbing eight boards.
Catawba shot just 39%, but made 10-of-23 (44%) behind the arc. The Indians enjoyed a 43-36 rebounding edge, including an 18-7 margin on the offensive glass. That led to a 16-3 advantage on second-chance points. Catawba made 12-of-13 (92%) from the line in the second half with 12 in a row over the final six minutes.
Davis led five Mars Hill starters in double digits with 17 points. Isaiah Jones followed with 16 points and Rajuan Conner collected 15. Catawba out-scored the Lions 30-8 off the bench.
Catawba will travel to Mars Hill on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip with the Lions.
