SALISBURY, N.C. -- Mars Hill hit a pair of solo home runs in the eighth inning to rally for a 5-4 win over host Catawba on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. The Lions up their record to 2-9, while the Catawba Indians go to 5-4.
Jordan Lathe opened the eight with a home run to pull Mars Hill even then Zach Weaver went deep with two outs to complete the comeback. Sam Kaplan (1-0) shut out Catawba on just one hit over the final four inning to grab the win. He walked two and fanned two.
Catawba had jumped to a 4-0 lead, scoring twice in each of the first two innings. Logan Rogers homered to put the Indians on the board and Caleb Mills scored on a wild pitch. Rogers singled home two runs in the second.
Mars Hill scored three times in the fifth. The Lions benefitted from a Catawba throwing error with Lathe doubling home another run with two outs. Brandon Rogers threw seven solid inning for the Indians, allowing just three runs, two earned, off four hits. He walked one and fanned three. Ross Fowler (0-1) took the loss in relief.
Lathe had two of the six Mars Hill hits. Rogers and Drew Robertson each had two of Catawba's six hits.
The teams will complete the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
