Key triples lead Baseball to bounce back win

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College baseball team got back in the win column Friday afternoon, utilizing a pair of key triples to a 5-3 win over Cedarville University at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 12-9 overall, while the Yellow Jackets drop to 3-12 on the season.

Austin Fine had another quality start for Catawba, giving up one earned run on three hits and two walks, striking out six in six innings of work. The junior righthander earned his fifth win in six starts this season.

Dylan Driver led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with an RBI triple and a run scored. Levi Perrell continued his hot streak, going 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases. Jackson Finger also tripled in a key spot late to help secure the win.

Cedarville's Kale Ebling hit a one-out double in the top of the first, advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a Lucas Rotello RBI single to put the Yellow Jackets in front early on.

Catawba responded, as Cameron Mills hit a leadoff single through the right side and Driver scored him on a triple down the left field line. With two away, Perrell put Catawba ahead on an RBI single.

Both starting pitchers settled in until a pair of Catawba errors allowed Cedarville to score two runs in the top of the sixth inning, taking a 3-2 lead. In the bottom half, Catawba's first two batters were retired, but Perrell and Jackson Price drew two-out walks and Finger drove them in on a triple to right-center. Finger scored on the next at-bat on a wild pitch to put Catawba back in front 5-3.

Casey Gouge provided solid relief out of the bullpen, retiring the first five batters he faced and striking out four in the seventh and eighth innings. After running into some trouble in the ninth, Robbie Cowie entered the game and forced a game-ending double play with the bases loaded to earn the win and his second save of the season.

Catawba returns to action at Newman Park, facing Saint Michael's College for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
