Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College baseball team used late-game surges to take both ends of a doubleheader at home against Anderson, completing the three-game sweep in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Saturday at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 22-14 overall and 12-3 in the SAC, while the Trojans drop to 17-19 overall and 6-9 in league play.
Cooper Bryson was a triple shy of the cycle in game one, going 3-for-4 with a double, a homer and two runs scored. Carson Yates homered for the second straight day, tallying two hits, driving in two runs and scoring two more. JR Lingerfelt also homered while Dylan Driver piled up three RBI on two hits.
Anderson took the lead in the top of the third inning on a sac fly from Justin Fox, but Driver answered with an RBI single to center in the bottom half. Catawba added more offensive support in the fourth with the Bryson homer and an RBI double from Harris Jackson.
The Trojans tied the game in the fifth on a pair of RBI base hits, but Catawba responded with two more runs in the bottom half on a fielder's choice from Cameron Mills and Lingerfelt's solo homer. Yates hit a two-run homer in the sixth and Driver's RBI double extended Catawba's lead to 8-3. The team poured it on in the seventh, walking in three runs.
Cole Hales earned the win, giving up one run on a homerun in 3.1 innings pitched.
Game two was much more pitcher-friendly, as Anderson scored the game's lone run through the five and a half innings. Down to their last six outs, Catawba exploded for four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Levi Perrell singled to lead off the inning and Driver drove him in on a double down the left field line. Jackson Price broke the tie on a pinch-hit double and Yates and Jackson provided insurance RBI the rest of the inning.
Robbie Cowie earned his second win of the year, making the last four outs while allowing just one hit.
The team returns to the road for non-conference action next week, traveling to Barton for a 3 p.m. start on Tuesday.
