Cowie ties all-time saves record in win over Limestone

Gaffney, S.C. —- The Catawba College baseball team won in a slugfest over Limestone on Friday night, winning 13-11 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. The Catawba Indians improve to 26-20 overall and 15-6 in the SAC, while Limestone drops to 18-27 on the season and 10-12 in league action.

Dylan Driver went 3-for-5 with a double, a homer and three RBI, while JR Lingerfelt also homered and drove three runs in. Drew Robertson and Cooper Bryson also recorded a pair of hits and scored multiple runs on the evening. Robbie Cowie came in for the save in the ninth inning, tying him for the program record for career saves.

Catawba opened up a 7-0 lead after three innings after Lingerfelt's three-run homer turned a 2-0 lead into a 5-0 lead and Levi Perrell and Cooper Bryson scored on an error before the five-run frame was over. Dylan Shugan's two-run double to left field cut Limestone's deficit to 7-2 in the bottom of the third.

The Catawba Indians got three runs back in the fourth on a Cameron Mills RBI single and two runs scored on a fielder's choice and an error to return Catawba's lead to 10-2. The Saints poured on five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to get back within three runs.

Driver homered to lead off the seventh and Cole Hales scored on a wild pitch before Driver's RBI single in the eighth extended Catawba's lead to 13-7.

Limestone got back a run in the eighth and hit a three-run homer in the ninth before Cowie shut the door to earn the save.

Austin Fine earned his ninth win of the year, allowing seven runs on nine hits and striking out four in 5.2 innings. James Deloatch got the loss for Limestone, allowing five runs on two hits and six walks in 2.2 innings of work. Cowie picked up his fifth save of the year, tying the program record with 26 career saves.

Catawba returns to action on Saturday, finishing out their SAC slate with a doubleheader against Limestone starting at 1 p.m.
