Wingate, N.C. —- The Catawba College baseball team ended its season on Saturday, as Anderson eliminated the Catawba Indians from the 2023 South Atlantic Conference Baseball Championship with a 7-3 win. The Trojans remain alive and improve to 25-26, while Catawba's season ends at 27-24 overall.
Dylan Driver led the way offensively with three hits including a double and Carson Yates added two hits with two runs driven in. Kye Andress drove in two and scored a run while Luke Poole recorded a pair of hits for the Trojans.
Levi Perrell walked and Driver doubled to lead off the game. Cameron Mills recorded an RBI groundout to give Catawba the early 1-0 lead.
Anderson responded with two runs in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth to take a commanding 6-1 lead after four innings.
Yates' two-RBI single cut Catawba's deficit to three runs, but the Trojans added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth and held off a Catawba comeback attempt.
Austin Mercado earned the run, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks, striking out two in six innings of work. Nick Miller got the save for Anderson, giving up just two hits in three shutout frames.
Brandon Rodgers took the loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits and one walk and two strikeouts in four innings. Robbie Cowie provided quality relief for Catawba, allowing one run on just three hits and a walk, striking out two in four innings of work.
