Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College women's volleyball team took down 2022 NCAA Regional participant Carson-Newman in four sets at Goodman Arena on Tuesday night, behind a combined 37 kills from Maillie Chretien and Katrina Misra.
TEAM STATS
- Carson-Newman had 56 kills to Catawba's 51
- The Catawba Indians hit .205 to the Eagles' .185
- C-N held a small advantage in assists 49-47
- Each team had four service aces
- Catawba enjoyed a slight advantage in digs 70-69 and in blocks 6-5
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Chretien had a career-high 20 kills to go along with 12 digs
- Misra had 17 kills, while hitting .351
- Siena Roethler recorded 39 assists with 15 digs
- Riley Hill had a game-high 24 digs, while Kary Hales added 10
- Chloe Danielson led Catawba with 1.5 blocks
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- The teams traded points early on, as the sides were tied 4-4
- Misra's kill capped a run of four straight points, as Catawba took an early lead
- Neither side was able to string together points as a C-N attack error gave the Catawba Indians a 15-9 lead midway through the set
- Catawba led by as much as 22-14 after Chretien's kill
- Despite a pair of Julia Wheeler kills, Catawba closed out the set 25-18
SECOND SET
- Carson-Newman scored the first four points of the second set
- A pair of Eagle attack errors cut Catawba's deficit to 6-5
- C-N responded with three straight points to take a 9-5 advantage
- The teams traded points until kills from Chretien and Jordan Danielson and an Eagle error brought Catawba within a point once again at 12-11
- Carson-Newman scored on five of seven points to to take a 21-17 lead
- Catawba could only pull within three the rest of the set, as C-N took set two 25-20
THIRD SET
- The Eagles took a 3-1 lead very early on
- Misra's kill and two straight C-N errors turned a Catawba deficit into an 8-6 lead
- The teams remained neck-and-neck, with ties at 9-9, 10-10, 11-11, 12-12 and 13-13
- C-N held the largest lead the rest of the set at just 19-17
- Back-to-back Chretien kills tied the set before Catawba earned three set points
- The home side finished the frame off with a kill from Ri Arevalo, 27-25
FOURTH SET
- Chretien's kill capped a 4-0 start for Catawba in the fourth set
- After the Eagles clawed back, Catawba rattled up three straight points to take a 10-5 lead
- Hales served for six straight points as the Catawba Indians opened up a 16-6 lead
- The Eagles fought all the way back to 19-18
- Catawba right the ship with three straight Misra kills and a Devyn Berg ace to take a 23-18 lead
- Lauren Patrick's kill finished the match off, for Catawba's second win over Carson-Newman since 2017

"It's always great to get a win at home," Ferguson said. "I'm proud of this team's growth. They are learning how to respond and compete together as a team. Each night it's been different players at different times. We're going to keep working at it and keep gaining competitive experience."
