Emory, Va. —- The 4th-ranked Catawba College women's basketball team utilized a game-high 27 points from grad student guard Lyrik Thorne, as the Catawba Indians survived 77-73 at Emory & Henry in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action.
TEAM STATS
- Emory & Henry shot 22-for-48 (46 percent) from the field, while Catawba was 26-of-71 (37 percent) from the floor
- The Wasps were 9-of-18 (50 percent) from three-point range; the Catawba Indians shot 10-for-35 (29 percent) from deep
- E&H was 20-for-25 (80 percent) from the free throw line, while Catawba shot 15-of-20 (75 percent) from the charity stripe
- Emory & Henry out-rebound the Catawba Indians 39-34, but Catawba held the slight 9-8 advantage in second-chance points
- The Wasps recorded 16 assists, but committed 29 turnovers; the Catawba Indians had 15 assists to 13 turnovers
- Catawba held a 21-11 advantage in points off turnovers, a 28-22 edge in points in the paint and 24-19 in bench points
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Lyrik Thorne recorded her third straight 20-point game, scoring 27 points with a game-high five three pointers and five assists and three steals
- Janiya Downs added 18 points on four three-pointers with six rebounds
- Saniya Wilson chipped in 10 points off the bench in 13 minutes
- Sara McIntosh recorded eight points and seven rebounds
- Janiya Foskey added eight points, six rebounds and three assists in 20 minutes off the bench
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Similar to their men's team, Emory & Henry scored the first five points of the game
- The Wasps led 10-2 at the 5:36 mark
- A Downs jumper and Thorne three-pointer cut the Catawba deficit down to 10-7
- Foskey tied the game, but E&H scored the next five points
- Wilson's triple at the end of the first quarter tied the game at 16
SECOND QUARTER
- The teams traded the lead early in the second quarter, but E&H led 25-19 at the 7:27 mark
- The lead grew to 30-21 after Emma Santoro's layup near the midway point
- Down's triple cut Catawba's deficit to four points just under the 4-minute mark
- Thorne drained another three-pointer to cut the E&H lead to two points, but the Wasps were able to push their lead back up to five points
- Late E&H free throws gave the hosts a 41-37 lead at the halftime break
THIRD QUARTER
- Thorne and Downs scored back-to-back baskets to take the lead back for Catawba
- Santoro answered back with a three-pointer, but Thorne fired back with a jumper to tie a game at 44 at the 5:42 mark
- Another Thorne triple and a jumper from Mary Spry gave Catawba a four-point lead and forcing an E&H timeout
- Scores from Wilson and Kairah Dixon-Booker put the Catawba Indians up by their largest margin to that point in the game, 53-45
- The Wasps struck with back-to-back three-pointers to cut their deficit all the way down to two points, 53-51, with 10 minutes left
FOURTH QUARTER
- E&H capped a 10-0 run to retake the lead early in the fourth quarter
- Thorne's three-pointer broke a 60-all tie at the 7:21 mark
- Foskey broke a nearly two-minute scoreless stretch between both sides to take a 67-62 lead
- Thorne's triple pushed the Catawba lead to six, but a quick 5-0 run from E&H cut their deficit to a single point with just over two minutes to go
- The Wasps made a layup with a minute left, but did not record a basket the rest of the way, as Catawba Indian free throws salted away their win to move to 5-0 in SAC play
