PREVIEW: Women's Volleyball encounters Wasps and Bears in weekend set

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Catawba College women's volleyball team starts a two-match weekend by riding the bus to Emory & Henry on Friday, returning to Goodman Arena for a Saturday matinee against Lenoir-Rhyne to kick off the season's home stretch.

 

Last Time Out

- The Catawba Indians were taken down by Coker, 3-0, in South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday night

- Sydney Wattles hit .263 and Kelcie Love recorded 10 kills despite the contest being rough overall for the blue and white

- Haley Moffett distributed 27 assists with four digs

- Riley Hill and Kary Hales chalked up 11 digs apiece

- Katie Clark and Lauren Bodell made their presences known at the net, each recording three block assists

 

Final Stretch of '23

- Catawba went up against Lenoir-Rhyne and Emory & Henry in back-to-back games in the late section of 2023, winning both contests as part of a six-match hot streak to end the regular season

- The squad topped LR, 3-1, on Oct. 28 in front of a loud and proud audience on Homecoming

- The blue and white kept it rolling by pulling out a hard-fought 3-2 triumph over the Wasps, rallying back from a 2-0 deficit with victories in the final three stanzas

 

All-Time Series

- Catawba has defeated Emory & Henry in each of the previous three meetings

- E&H hosted the 2022 matchup, resulting in the Catawba Indians securing its second consecutive sweep

- Last season's encounter saw the Wasps win their first two sets, moving the all-time set score to 9-2

- Lenoir-Rhyne has won 13 of its last 14 meetings against Catawba, but the blue and white still lead at 57-44

- When Catawba hosted LR last season on Oct. 28, the Catawba Indians inflicted a 3-1 takedown to snap a 12-match drought

 

Scouting the Wasps

- Hosting Catawba for Senior Night, Emory & Henry holds a record of 5-19 with a 2-12 in-conference ledger

- The Wasps got their second SAC victory on Wednesday, avenging an earlier loss to UVA Wise by sweeping the Highland Cavaliers

- Brianna Hogan is E&H's primary offensive weapon at 2.44 kills per set, also chipping in 108 digs and 30 blocks on the defensive end

- At libero, Libby Bickelhaupt ranks third in the conference with 5.11 digs per frame

 

Scouting the Bears

- Lenoir-Rhyne boasts a 21-4 record including a 12-3 clip in conference play

- After defeating Catawba on Senior Day last Friday, the Bears surrendered a 3-1 decision to Anderson on Wednesday

- Earlier that day, LR was announced as one of five SAC teams under consideration in NCAA Regional Rankings that are used to determine the national tournament field

- Kayli Cleaver's 3.16 kills per set paces the offense while Jenna Vogen is posting 2.41 kills per stanza to go with a team-high 30 service aces

- Two-time SAC Defensive Player of the Week Averie Dale has tallied blocks in all but two matches this season, totaling 99 stops for a 1.15 per-set average
