Women's, Men's Golf opens spring season at LMU Kickoff

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Catawba men's and women's golf opened their spring seasons in Florida this week at the LMU Spring Kick-Off Intercollegiate, taking on a bevy of teams over the course of three rounds played on Monday and Tuesday. The women would finish eighth at +80, 948 after play concluded on Tuesday afternoon, while the men would finish the day at 18th, +82/946 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

 

Emily Wellspeak led the way for the women's team, finishing the third and final round in 21st with a score of +15, 231. She steadily progressed as the Invitational went on, opening play on Monday with a +6, 78 before a +5, 77 in round two. Her best golf came on Tuesday, with a +4, 76, just missing out on climbing even higher. Wellspeak tallied five birdies and an eagle, coming on the 11th hole in round one 

Mary-Paige King was right behind Wellspeak, ending play T-23rd with a final ledger of +18, 234. King would shoot +7, 79 in both the first and third rounds, tallying a solid +4, 76 in the second round via four of her six birdies 

Chloe Crane would finish T-31st at +21, 237, starting off in a tough way with a +10, 82 but rallying with a +5, 77 in the second round and a +6, 78 in the third. Crane tallied nine birdies, with eight of them coming in the final two rounds as she found her footing  

Maddy Vogan ended Tuesday T-53rd, opening strong with a +5, 77 effort and three birdies in the first round but shooting a derailing +13, 85 in the second. Vogan's third round would see her tally a +10, 82 

- Lauren Hackler rounded out the Catawba women, finishing T-61st after shooting +32, 248. Hackler's best play came in rounds one and three, where she finished both at +9, 81 

For the men, Paul Esnault would finish T-72nd with a final ledger of +10, 234. Esnault enjoyed a solid start int the first two rounds on Monday, shooting a +5, 77 in the opening round with three birdies before tallying a +3, 75 ledger in round two thanks to another four birdies and 13 holes at even or better. However, Esnault would see himself slip down the leaderboard in round three with a +10, 82  

Luke Nelson and Ryan Masterton would both finish play T-79th, 238. Both played their best golf in round one, with Nelson shooting +4, 76 and Masterton right behind him at +5, 77. However, a +10, 82 for Nelson and a +9, 81 for Masterton in the second round combined with the both of them shooting +8, 80 in the final round would see them slide in the standings. Both Nelson and Masterton tallied five birdies apiece  

Connor Carter ended the final round T-89th at +29, 245. After a tough opening two rounds, he was able to find his footing in the final round, shooting +6, 78 

Hayden Mincey rounded out the Catawba men in 93rd, finishing +31, 247. Mincey's best golf came in the opening round, where he tallied a ledger of +5, 77 

 

NOTES 

Catawba's women would finish 3rd overall in Par 3's, with a mark of +9/3.15 

The women would also tie for fifth in overall birdies, with 24  

Vogan and Wellspeak both tied for sixth among individuals in Par 3's, at Even/3.00 

Crane's nine birdies tied her for eight among individuals 

Wellspeak was one of eight women with an eagle during play  

 

UP NEXT

 - Both Catawba golf teams are in action again on Monday, Feb. 26, and Tuesday, Feb. 27th. The women's team heads to Mt. Pleasant, S.C. to compete in the Low Tide Invitational, while the men travel to Pawley's Island, S.C. to compete in the Bulldog Clash
