Hickory, N.C. —- The Catawba College men's basketball team scored 97 points on the second-ranked defense in the South Atlantic Conference on Wednesday night, but fell late at Lenoir-Rhyne to see their six-game win streak snapped.
TEAM STATS
- Catawba shot 36-for-55 (66 percent) from the field; Lenoir-Rhyne was 32-of-52 (62 percent) from the floor
- The Bears were 13-for-21 (62 percent) from three-point range, while the Catawba Indians were 8-of-20 (40 percent) from deep
- Catawba was 17-for-21 (81 percent) from the free throw line, while LR went 22-of-31 (71 percent) from the charity stripe
- The Catawba Indians out-rebounded Lenoir-Rhyne 25-22
- The Bears recorded 21 assists to 11 turnovers, while Catawba had 17 assists to 11 turnovers; LR held a slight 12-10 edge in points off turnovers
- Catawba held a slight 40-36 edge in points in the paint, while Lenoir-Rhyne held the 55-44 advantage in bench points
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- O'Mazeon Tinsley posted a career-high in the second straight game, scoring 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting with three assists and no turnovers
- Javeon Jones chipped in 15 points on 7-for-10 shooting with six rebounds, four assists and two blocks
- Montraivis White came off the bench for 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting with three assists
- Kaleb Wallace was perfect from the field – 3-for-3 from three-point range and 2-for-2 from the foul line – for 11 points in 16 minutes off the bench
- DeAngelo Epps was the fifth Catawba Indian in double figures with 10 points
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
- Surprisingly, the shootout started with nearly three minutes of scoreless action; Tinsley scored the game's first point at the 17:22 mark
- The Catawba Indians led 7-0 after White's triple
- Catawba held a mid-sized lead for much of the first half, until LR trimmed their deficit to three points with less than five minutes in the first half
- Back-to-back Epps dunks returned the lead to 38-31
- Six straight points from the Bears' brought the hosts within a single point
- LR tied the game at three points over the final two minutes, but never led, as the teams entered the halftime locker room deadlocked at 45
SECOND HALF
- The Bears took their first lead of the game on the first possession of the second half
- Catawba answered back with an 11-0 run over the next three and a half minutes, capped by Tinsley's jumper
- LR answered with a 10-0 run of their own to regain the lead
- Kris Robinson's layup returned the lead to Catawba at the 14-minute mark
- The lead changed hands over the next three possessions, with the second-half tally reaching 21-20 just eight minutes in
- Lenoir-Rhyne led 71-65 at the 10:48 mark
- Six straight Catawba points tied the game at 71
- Tinsley's three-pointer at the 4:29 mark extended Catawba's lead to 86-81
- LR's Cooper Foster's free throws tied the game at 93 with just over a minute to go
- Jones' go-ahead jumper was topped with an LR three-pointer to give the Bears the late lead
- Jones answered with another go-ahead layup, which was once again answered by a late LR bucket
- A loose ball foul, gave LR another free throw, but Catawba's shot for a tie was off the mark as time expired
