Stellar pitching day pushes Softball to sweep over Shippensburg, Lees-McRae

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College softball team has now won six of its last seven games after pulling out the sweep over Shippensburg and Lees-McRae on Saturday at Whitley Field.

 

GAME ONE | Catawba 4, Shippensburg 3

TEAM STATS

- Both teams recorded eight hits

- Shippensburg had the lone extra-base hit in the game

- The Raiders committed all three errors in the contest

- SU also had the only stolen base of the game

- Catawba's Alex Baquie went the distance, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out five; Shippensburg's staff allowed three earned runs on eight hits and eight walks, striking out four

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Aniyah King went 2-for-4 with a run driven in and a run scored

- Bri Herring also had a 2-for-4 game with a run scored

- Kary Hales singled, drove in a run and scored

- Bri Gallagher singled, walked three times and scored

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- A double and a single both drove in runs for the Raiders to take an early 2-0 lead

 

THIRD INNING

- Herring singled and Gallagher walked to lead off the third

- Hales' RBI single got Catawba on the board

- Gallagher scored on an error before King's RBI singled scored Hales, as the Catawba Indians took a 3-2 lead

 

FIFTH INNING

- Riley Tucker drove in King from second to add an insurance run for Catawba

 

SIXTH INNING

- Shippensburg stole second and later scored on an RBI single, but Baquie shut the door with a strikeout

 

SEVENTH INNING

- Catawba intentionally walked the go-ahead run, but Baquie forced a foul-out to earn the game one win

 

GAME TWO | Catawba 4, Lees-McRae 1

TEAM STATS

- Lees-McRae out-hit Catawba 6-4

- The Bobcats had both extra-base hits in the game including the lone homer

- LMC's pitchers allowed four earned runs on four hits and four walks, striking out 10; Catawba's staff allowed one earned run on six hits and one walks, striking out five

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Herring went 1-for-2 with two runs scored

- Hales drove in a pair on a single

- Tucker got the win in the circle, allowing just one run in four innings

- Baquie dominated to earn the save, striking out four in three hitless innings

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Catawba drew three straight walks to start the home half of the first, forcing the Bobcats to make a pitching change

- Hales singled to score two and Tucker later scored on a wild pitch to take an early 3-0 lead

 

FOURTH INNING

- LMC's McKenzie Presson homered for the Bobcats' lone run of the game

 

FIFTH INNING

- Gallagher drove in an insurance run in the fifth

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba returns to Whitley Field on Sunday, hosting Shippensburg at 11 a.m. and Lees-McRae at 3 p.m.
