Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College baseball team completed the sweep over Shippensburg on Sunday, defeating the Raiders 8-5 at Newman Park in their final weekend series of non-conference play.
TEAM STATS
- Shippensburg out-hit Catawba 10-8
- The Raiders recorded four of six extra-base hits; both teams hit a homer
- SU committed two of three errors in the game
- The Catawba Indians had all three stolen bases of the afternoon
- Catawba's pitchers allowed five earned runs on 10 hits and four walks, striking out four; Shippenburg's staff allowed seven earned runs on eight hits and six walks, striking out five
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Bo Rusher went 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, two RBI and two runs scored
- Logan Rogers was 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and a run scored
- Levi Perrell also added a pair of hits with a walk, a steal and a run scored
- Sam Hunter had a 1-for-2 game with two walks, a steal, an RBI and two runs scored
- Hayden Simmerson earned the win on the mound in his second straight start, going six innings while allowing three runs on six hits and two walks, striking out three
- Mason Gwyn and Brandon Rodgers combined to allow 1.1 innings of shutout relief
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST INNING
- Perrell singled and stole second to lead off the game
- Rusher's RBI groundout scored him for the game's first run
SECOND INNING
- Austin Baal hit a leadoff solo homer in the second inning
- Jaxon Dalena singled to score another run with still nobody out
- Simmerson forced a double play that scored a run, with SU leading 3-1
- Rogers got a run back in the bottom half with a two-out homer to left
FOURTH INNING
- The Catawba Indians loaded the bases with one out in the fourth
- Rogers' infield single scored the tying run
- Drew Robertson's sac fly in foul territory in left field scored Ty Hubbard from third to take the lead
FIFTH INNING
- Hunter walked and stole second with one out in the fifth
- A failed pickoff attempt moved him up to third
- Rusher drove him in on a sac fly to break the tie, as Catawba led 5-3
SEVENTH INNING
- Justin Byler's two-out double tied the game for Shippensburg
- Hunter singled through the right side to score Perrell in the bottom half to regain the lead
- Cole Hales singled to score Hunter and Hubbard's RBI fielder's choice gave the Catawba Indians an 8-4 lead
NINTH INNING
- Byler recorded another RBI single in the ninth, but Griffyn Shelton recorded the punchout to end the game and improve Catawba to 7-3 on the year
UP NEXT
- Catawba returns to Newman Park on Tuesday, hosting defending Conference Carolinas Tournament champion Mount Olive for a non-conference matinee; first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
