Edmiston fans 10, Baseball holds on for midweek win over Newberry

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College baseball bounced back on Tuesday afternoon at Newman Park, hanging on to defeat defending South Atlantic Conference champions Newberry in a non-conference matchup.

 

TEAM STATS

- Catawba out-hit Newberry 11-8

- The Catawba Indians had two of three extra-base hits in the contest

- Newberry committed two of three errors on the evening

- Catawba had four of six stolen bases

- Catawba's pitchers allowed five earned runs on eight hits and seven walks, striking out 12; Newberry's staff allowed six earned runs on 11 hits and four walks, striking out two

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Carson Edmiston struck out 10 batters out of 14 outs recorded in the start, allowing two earned runs on four hits

- Chase Drinkard earned the win, tossing two shutout innings with just a walk allowed

- Cole Hales came in for the four-out save, stranding the bases loaded in the top of the eighth

- Drew Robertson continued his hot stretch, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored

- Levi Perrell also recorded three hits with a double and a run scored

- Hales was 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Perrell doubled to lead off the game

- After tagging up on a flyout, he scored on Sam Hunter's RBI groundout

 

SECOND INNING

- Hales led off the second with a single; he scored on Robertson's RBI double

- Robertson would later scored on a wild pitch as the Catawba Indians led 3-0

 

THIRD INNING

- Newberry got on the board in the third on Jacob LeBron's RBI single

- He later scored on a wild pitch to cut Catawba's lead to 3-2

 

FOURTH INNING

- Jackson Finger's two-out RBI single scored Robertson to add a run of cushion in the fourth

 

FIFTH INNING

- Hunter walked to lead off the fifth and advanced to second on a wild pitch

- Hales' single up the middle scored him as Catawba led 5-2

 

SEVENTH INNING

- Hunter's lead-off walk and Bo Rusher's single to right-center put runners at the corners with nobody out

- The Wolves got Catawba to ground into a double play, but Hunter scored to make it 6-2

 

EIGHTH INNING

- After four scoreless frames, Catawba's staff ran into some trouble in the eighth, as a walk and two singles loaded the bases for the Wolves with nobody out

- Cooper Gentry's RBI fielder's choice and Donovan Ford's RBI infield single cut Catawba's lead to 6-4

- Newberry drew a bases-loaded walk to get within a run

- Hales got Newberry's cleanup hitter to ground out to hold the lead

 

NINTH INNING

- The tying run got aboard on a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but Hales got the go-ahead run to ground out to end the game, forcing a season series split between the Wolves and Catawba Indians

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba opens up its conference home slate this weekend, hosting 24th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne at Newman Park for a three-game set starting on Friday at 5 p.m.
