Salisbury, N.C. – The Catawba College Men's Lacrosse team would be downed by a score of 19-13 in a come-from-behind win by No. 6 Newberry at Shuford Stadium on Saturday, with Catawba giving the Wolves everything they would handle before a spirited Newberry effort in the fourth quarter turned the game. Catawba now drops to 5-4 on the season and 2-2 in Conference action, with Newberry now 7-1 and 2-1 in the SAC
- Newberry outshot Catawba 58-44, with the Wolves putting 34 attempts on goal wot Catawba's 26
- The Wolves would turn the ball over 17 times, with Catawba giving away possession 15 times of their own. Newberry led in ground balls by a large margin, 56-23
- Newberry was also huge in the faceoff circle, coming away with 24-35 wins
- Catawba goalies combined for 15 saves on the day, with James Crighton making 11 and Tyler Ahlvers making four in his Catawba debut. Crighton would take the loss, dropping to 5-4 on the season
- For Newberry, Ryan Erler and Nolan Downey combined for 13 saves, with Erler getting credit for the win with and moving to 7-1 after stopping nine shots
- Frank Centrone, Gabriel Barker, and Jordan Dash each scored hat-tricks for Catawba, with Garrett Simi adding two. Hunter Clarke and Peyton Turner also found the back of the net
- Cetrone and Tanner Stout both assisted a pair of goals, with Turner and Jackson Braswell also setting up teammates. Cetrone's five points led Catawba on the afternoon
- Barker led Catawba with eight shots, putting four on target. Stout and Dash each had seven, with Dash also putting four on goal
- Payton Leonard recovered four ground balls, followed by Eli Horton and Brian Garcia with three each
- Horton also caused a pair of turnovers, while Leonard, Dylan Kesselring, and Jack Butler all caused two
- Catawba flexed their muscles in the first quarter, coming out of the gates strong in pursuit of the upset with a 4-1 showing in the first 15:00
- Cetrone opened the scoring with the first two goals of the game, with his first coming off of an assist from Stout at the 11:31 mark and his second coming with 8:21 on the clock
- Baker Westmoreland would convert a man-up opportunity off an assist from Curtis Bukta at 4:24, as Newberry would be held scoreless for just over 10 minutes to begin the game
- Catawba had an answer in the form of another 2-0 run, however, with Clarke striking just 1:10 after Westmoreland's goal and Simi exploding through the Newberry defense with :51 seconds before the first intermission to score Catawba's fourth
- Zach Thompson opened the scoring in the second quarter just :38 seconds in, answered by Dash with his first goal of the game just 1:13 later as both teams traded early goals
- Scott Reed and James Osorio scored their first goals of the game for Newberry at 9:52 and 7:02 respectively, bringing the Wolves to within one as they trailed 4-5
- Simi tallied his second goal of the game with 4:26 to until the half, sending Catawba into the break up by two goals and seeking the upset, 6-4
- Catawba continued to pile on the goals to open the second half, opening on a 3-1 run in the first five minutes
- Cetrone completed his hat-trick after 1:11 had gone in the quarter off of an assist from Turner, who would then go on to score an acrobatic finish on a feed from Braswell only 1:01 afterwards to make it 8-4, Catawba
- Bukta put himself on the scoresheet for Newberry :49 seconds after Turner's goal, only for Barker to answer with his first of the game :59 seconds later with 10:50 on the clock
- And the goalscoring frenzy wasn't over; Reed scored his second Wolves goal on an assist from Thompson only :38 seconds after Barker had struck. Brock Strong would be able to pull the Wolves to within two at 9:08 with the score now 9-7, Catawba
- That would only hold for :30 seconds, as Dash made the most off of a man-up situation thanks to an assist from Cetrone and Barker struck again at 7:13 to again give Catawba a four-goal cushion, 11-7
- The final six minutes, however, would be all Newberry as they flipped the switch offensively. Miles Jones, Westmoreland, and Bukta each tallied goals during a 5-0 Wolves run. Reed would score the other two as he completed his own hat-trick with 2:19 left in the quarter, giving Newberry their first lead of the game at 12-11 after a frantic quarter that featured 12 goals
- Sam Parent, Bukta, Osorio, and Wesmoreland each scored in the opening 5:16 of the final quarter as Newberry's 5-0 run turned into a 9-0 explosion, halted by Dash with his third of the game at the 8:29 mark
- But the damage was done, with Newberry now leading 16-12 after Dash broke Catawba's scoreless streak. Barker's third of the game with 3:35 to go would be canceled out by two more goals from Reed and another from Osorio as the Wolves ripped off a 7-2 run in the fourth quarter, part of a 15-7 second half for the win
- This was Cetrone's third time this season with at least three goals, and he's scored six over the last three games. Cetrone's five points on the day now give him 26 for the season, second highest on the team
- Turner recorded his third game of the season with at least a goal and an assist, as he added to his team-high 28 points
- Barker's three goals today were his second hat-trick of the season, with his total for the season now at 15. He's scored at least two in six of the last seven games
- Dash's first three-goal effort of the season put him into double-digit goals for the season, with 12
- Simi now has four goals and six points over his last two games, as he's now surpassed his tally for goals from last season with 10 for the first time
- Stout's two-assist outing was the first of his young career and a career high
- The Catawba College Men's Lacrosse team is back in action on Saturday, March 23, heading to Harrogate, Tenn. as they take on the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters at 2 p.m.
