Coker tops #14 Baseball in series opener

Hartsville, S.C. ---- The 14th-ranked Catawba College baseball team dropped the series opener with conference contender Coker on Friday night, 6-5, in South Atlantic Conference baseball action.

 

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Coker 13-7

- Both teams recorded three extra-base hits

- The Catawba Indians recorded two of three errors in the contest

- The Cobras had all three stolen bases in the contest

-Coker's pitchers allowed four earned runs on 13 hits and four walks, striking out six; Catawba's staff allowed six earned runs on seven hits and two walks, striking out six

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

Cooper Bryson was 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBI and a run scored

Logan Rogers went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and two runs scored

Cole Hales recorded a pair of hits and scored a run

Mason Gwyn and Brandon Rodgers both provided a shutout inning of relief

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Coker opened the home half of the first with a solo homer to take an early lead

 

SECOND INNING

- Catawba answered back when Rogers' double scored Drew Robertson from first

- Then, Bryson's triple scored Rogers before Ty Hubbard followed up with an RBI double as Catawba opened up a 3-1 lead

A Coker two-out single started the rally with two away for the Cobras in the bottom half

- A double scored another before another double scored two more as Coker reclaimed the lead, 5-3

 

THIRD INNING

- An infield single loaded the bases for the Catawba Indians with one out in the third

Bryson drove in another run on a fielder's choice, but the Cobras were able to cut down another runner trying to score to end the inning

 

SIXTH INNING

- Bryson tallied another RBI on a single to center to tie the game in the sixth

 

SEVENTH INNING

- Coker recorded an RBI fielder's choice for the go-ahead run before Catawba tallied a triple play to keep the lead at one

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba and Coker finish out the series with a doubleheader on Saturday with Coker two games back in the SAC standings; first pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m.
