#9 Baseball drops World Series opener vs. #21 Southern N.H.

Cary, N.C. —- The 9th-ranked and third-seeded Catawba College baseball team fell short in its opening game of the Division II National Championships at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., falling to 21st-ranked and sixth-seeded Southern New Hampshire behind a complete shutout performance on the mound.

 

TEAM STATISTICS

- Southern New Hampshire out-hit Catawba 9-4

- The Penmen had both extra-base hits in the game, both homers

- Catawba stranded four runners, SNHU left six on the bases

- The Catawba Indians committed all three errors in the game

- The Penmen had three of four steals on the afternoon

- SNHU's Austin Trumpour went the complete game, allowing just four hits and one walk with five strikeouts; Catawba's staff allowed three earned runs on nine hits and six walks, striking out seven 

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Levi Perrell singled and stole a base

- Drew Robertson, Cooper Bryson and Ty Hubbard were the other Catawba Indians to record a base knock

- Austin Fine and Hayden Simmerson provided shutout innings in relief

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- A single and a pair of walks loaded the bases for SNHU with two outs

- A bloop single to left from Jake Risedorf scored the game's first run, but Perrell threw out the second runner at the plate to keep the Penmen's lead to 1-0

 

FIFTH INNING

- SNHU got a runner aboard on a two-out bloop single just down the left field line

- Jorge Burgos launched his 19th homer of the season to extend the Penmen lead to 3-0

- A walk and another homer from Dylan O'Sullivan made it a 5-0 lead for SNHU

 

SEVENTH INNING

- The Penmen started the inning with a pair of walks and stole second and third with nobody out

- Catawba got a strikeout on a dropped third strike, but the SNHU runner broke for home and an error scored two to push SNHU's lead to seven runs

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba faces elimination on Tuesday, squaring off against the loser of Tampa and UIndy at 1:30 p.m.
