#9 Women's Soccer draws with WVSU on First Responders Night

Salisbury, N.C. —- The 9th-ranked Catawba College women's soccer team out-shot West Virginia State 12-3 on Wednesday night at Frock Field, but one shot proved to be a decisive one for the Yellow Jackets, as the teams played to a 1-1 draw.

 

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-shot West Virginia State 12-3

- The Catawba Indians held a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal

- The Yellow Jackets made each of the five saves on the night

- Catawba took all seven corner kicks in the match

- Both teams committed 12 fouls; WVSU got booked twice for yellow cards

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Bree Ehmer netted her first goal of the season on a penalty kick early in the second half

- Callie Hammond, Ellie Schock, Ella Matthews and Lillie Rusher got shots on target in the contest

- Maddie Grubb got the tie in her first outing of the season in goal

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST HALF

- Matthews' shot in the 10th minute was on frame, but saved by the veteran WVSU keeper

- Rusher got another shot on frame, but Catawba was only able to record one shot in the final 30 minutes of the first half

 

SECOND HALF

- The Yellow Jackets began to find offensive form early in the second half, recording their first two shots in the opening three minutes of the final frame

- Ehmer drew a penalty in the box and converted the PK, resulting in her first goal of the season and the lead for the Catawba Indians

- Hammond attempted to double the lead, but the Yellow Jackets' keeper made another stop in the 58th minute

- Ehmer nearly added to the scoring herself in the 65th minute, but a close shot sailed high

- WVSU capitalized, as Billie Jean Davies' free kick found the feet of Leila Karam, who launched a deep shot from outside the box that snuck over Grubb's out-stretched arms

- Schock looked for the go-ahead score in the 77th minute, but WVSU got a finger on it to keep the game deadlocked

- Catawba's best chance came in the 87th, but Ehmer's shot was saved, finalizing the 1-1 draw

 

GAME NOTES

- Ehmer's 12th career goal in 26 games in the red and blue

- The reigning SAC Freshman of the Year has recorded a point in each of Catawba's opening three games this season

- Catawba is 31-1-6 at Frock Field since the start of the 2021 season

- First regular season draw or worse against a non-conference opponent at Frock Field since Sept. 9, 2021; Catawba has not lost to a non-conference opponent in the regular season at the Frock since 2017

- Wednesday was Catawba and WVSU's first-ever meeting

- Team debuted USA-inspired uniforms in honor of the 23rd anniversary of the September 11th attacks and in recognition of the efforts of first responders to protect  and serve local communities

- Catawba continues its season-opening five-game homestand with a matchup against Montevallo on Saturday for Youth Night; kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
