SALISBURY, N.C. – The Catawba College women's volleyball team dropped its home opener match to Anderson, 3-0, Friday night at Goodman Gym.
TEAM STATS
- Anderson (5-5, 2-1 SAC) notched a .224 hitting percentage while the Catawba Indians (1-7, 0-2 SAC) were less successful, getting held to a season-low .029 clip
- Catawba was better in service with its .907 serve percentage compared to Anderson's .892 mark as the Trojans gave Catawba eight points via error
- The visitors finished with advantages in the assist (33-26), dig (49-40), and block (6-4) categories
INDIVIDUAL STATS
- Katrina Misra tallied eight kills on a season-best .273 hitting percentage, leading Catawba in both statistics
- Jordan Danielson found paydirt on seven attacks and added a block assist
- Freshman setter Sydney McCutcheon contributed 19 assists with six digs
- Riley Hill collected 10 digs as she, Kary Hales, and Riannel Arevalo had one service ace apiece
- Sydney Wattles had a breakout night at the net with four blocks including a solo stop in her best performance as a Catawba Indian
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
- Danielson and Misra kills plus an ace by Hill were the match's first three points, but Catawba miscues allowed the Trojans to close in quickly
- Errors on both ends were followed by back-to-back darts by Danielson to retake the lead, 10-9
- Strong serving from Libby Nieporte and Anderson's blocking corps forced Catawba to burn two timeouts
- Consecutive Trojan gaffes spurred a timeout from the visitors who held a narrow 18-17 edge
- After the stanza was tied eight times with three lead changes, Anderson regained composure to prevail 25-22 in the opening set
Second Set
- Despite starting the set with a Hales ace, Catawba had to play catch-up as errors and Anderson kills from the outside stretched the deficit to 9-5
- McCutcheon dropped the hammer once between Rachel Gonzales kills in an effort to close the gap
- Lauren Patrick and Lauren Bodell, who had just entered the match, tallied points to keep the lead from slipping out of reach
- Following a solo block from Wattles to trim Anderson's lead to 18-15, the Trojans recorded the next three points
- Emily Campbell and Ava Reeves shared a block on set point to give AU a 2-0 lead heading into the third frame
Third Set
- Brantley Chipley logged a kill and a solo block during a 3-0 start for the Trojans as Misra blasted a kill to halt the flood
- Anderson created a seven-point gap for itself thanks to successful attacks from Campbell and Hannah Neff
- Down 15-8, Wattles landed a kill to start a four-point comeback bid but the Trojans countered with a quartet-long streak of their own
- Following a Catawba timeout at 17-11, Anderson went on an 8-2 run to chalk up its first South Atlantic Conference victory of the season
